Jmol: Molecule Viewer

  • This is a Java-based program and should work on either Mac OS or Windows if you have the latest version of Java installed. (See below.)

  • Instructions:
    1. Download the zip file. (direct link to ZIP file - choose to save the file.)
    2. Unzip the file (usually by double-clicking on it).
    3. Move the extracted folder to a convenient file location. It will not be automatically installed as other programs might.
    4. To launch the Jmol Viewer, locate the file Jmol.jar and double-click on it.
    5. Download the ethane molecule file. Right-click on the link and choose to "Save linked file as..."
    6. From the viewer "File" menu in Jmol, select "Open..." and Browse to the ethane.pdb file and select it. Or simply drag the file onto the open viewer window.
    7. If all is working properly, you will see the ethane molecule. You can turn it and resize it with the mouse. You can also make menu other modifications through the menus - play around with the model. Each time you reopen, it will go back to the original view.

  • You can also visit the Jmol website where you can find information about the viewer and download it there.

Java Platform Website

  • If you are working with the Mac OS, you should have Java preinstalled and it should update through your Mac OS system updates.
  • If you are on Windows, it is likely installed.
  • If you are on other platforms, or are having trouble getting Jmol to launch through Java, please visit the Java website at the link above.
