Tip: work light to dark to build up value

  • Pastels, charcoal, chalks, pencils, conte, etc. Use several.
  • Use blender, eraser
  • opacity slider and gray colors to control value

Seven Values:

  1. Highlight
  2. Light Value (tone)
  3. Middle Tone
  4. Dark Tone (shadow)
  5. Core Shadow
  6. Reflected Light
  7. Cast Shadow

Try all different types: reed, croquil, thick/thin, caligraphic,
sumi-e, etc.

  • Use hatching and cross hatching to build up value
  • Use opacity and white color to control value
