GLAZING - Using OILS |
| 1. File size - 6" x6" @200ppi (Sketchbook) |
| 2. Start with a value drawing in charcoal (Lots of values) |
| 3. Put drawing on a layer>select GEL method |
4. Fill the Canvas layer with a brown color with @ a 45% value on the color wheel. |
5. Make a new layer, you will paint the white underpainting in this layer. |
6. Working with white only, choose Oils (not Artists Oils). Slide the opacity to @11%. Medium Bristle Oils works well, but you can experiment. |
7. Paint in the layer with the white, it should be thinner or less opaque in the middle values, and thicker in the light values and highlights, Let the drawing show through in the dark values. Don't forget the light areas in the shadows (reflected light is the same value as the middle value. |
| 8. Remember that glazes are thin layers of color and that you need the white under them to give them luminance. |
9. Gradually work more opaquely and change to thick oils, or if brave, use the impasto! But only in the highlight areas - impt. You can be expressive with your brushwork as you only need to worry about value not color! |
| 10. When done with white underpainting choose oils>glazing brushes or feathering brushes. Fine soft glazing works best. |
| 11. Layer color over the white underpainting, being careful not to let the darks get opaque, work light to dark, warm and cool in layers. Leave some of the previous color showing as you add more layers. Try to follow the values of the underpainting. |
