Project #4 Trompe L'oeil Painting

File Size 8'x10" @200ppi - due May 11, 2006

The object is to create a painting where the objects and space are so real you could touch it . Shallow spaces work well and scale of objects should be considered in relation to the final size of the painting (8"x10"). An object that is too big will not give the same effect of reality as one that in real life will fit in an 8"x10" space. (See www.nga.gov/exhibitions/trompe-info.htm for examples)

1.

Subject: Tools, ribbons, fabric, toys, picture frames etc. Be Creative

2.

Scan (at 200ppi or higher) or take a digital photo of the objects. Scan or photograph them individually (together as well, if you like).

3.

Read Chapter 5 - Selections and Masks as you will have to select your objects without their backrounds, then re-combine them in your composition. Keeping each element on its own layer will allow for maximum flexibility.

4. Use Painter"s ability to create paper textures ( Painter WOW, P. 238)
Paper Palette | Capture Paper
5. Create patterns (pp299, 304-306) - Pattern Palette | Capture Pattern | Check out Pattern.
6. Experiment with Dynamic layers in layers palette (icon of plug at bottom of palette)
7. Experiment with special effects like drop shadows - Effects | Objects | Drop Shadow. Use offset to change direction of shadow (you can use minus sign). object must be in its own layer to have a drop shadow. Collapse object and shadow together.
8. As always, some consideration regarding a color harmony and principles of composition will make your project more sucessful.
