We flew into the town of La Ceiba which is a coastal town on the
eastern Caribbean side. On the
Caribbean side there are Spanish speaking Latinos as you'd expect but there
is also a large population of black Hondurans who speak English with a
Jamaican sounding accent. Here
is a street in La Ceiba lined with outdoor booths selling clothing,
sunglasses, shoes, etc..

The beach in La Ceiba at sunset.
The temperatures were in the humid 90's and the ocean water
temperature felt equally as warm.

From La Ceiba we took at 2 hour boat ride out to the island of
Roatan, which is the largest island off the coast of Honduras and is about
40 miles long and 2 miles wide with a population of about 25,000. This part of Roatan is called the West
End, which has one sandy hard-packed street that runs along the ocean's
edge and is lined with dive shops, bars, restaurants, and cabins for rent.

We went to a Marine Institute and got to swim with dolphins. There were about 18 dolphins in
this ocean enclosure that we got to snorkel with. They were very playful and I picked sea grass from the
floor and they would come and snatch it in their mouths.

We also got to hold and pet the dolphins who were very friendly. They felt like pure muscle and
their skin had a sort of tough leathery feel to it.

This part of the island is called West Bay which has beautiful
beaches and a reef you can swim to from the shore and enjoy some amazing snorkeling. At the reef we saw eels, tons of
different types and colors of coral and schools of fish you could swim
along with.

We visited an iguana farm which protects and feeds hundreds of
iguanas. You could walk
amongst them and scratch their sides and they would lean into your hand
like a dog enjoying a good rub down with their eyes closed.

There were tame Cappuccino monkeys on the island that you could hold
and they crawled all over us and swung from our arms. We also got to pet the larger
species of Spider monkey who were very affectionate.

We were very sad to leave the island of Roatan which was a very
beautiful place to visit.
