Student Participation and Performance in
English Puente Classes, 1993-1997

Puente Program student outcomes reported in this study demonstrate that:

retention and student success in Puente sections of English 800 (a pre-transfer level course) were substantially higher than in non-Puente sections of the same course. See Figure 1.

although student retention in Puente sections of English 100/105 (transfer level courses) was essentially the same as that in non-Puente sections, Puente students achieved a higher success rate than students in the non-Puente sections of the same classes. See Figure 2.

Hispanic students enrolled in Puente sections of English 800/100/105 were more successful and less likely to withdraw from their classes than Hispanic students who enrolled in non-Puente sections of the same courses. See Figure 3. and Figure 4.

students enrolled in Puente sections of English 800/100/105 achieved significantly higher GPAs than students enrolled in non-Puente sections of the same courses. This was true for all students and for Hispanic students in particular. See Figure 5.
