Paradox of Affluence Photo Essay
Kelnia

This photograph taken at Yosemite Park is a great representation
of how the bottled water is coming back to it's source. |

Waterfalls are magnificent aspects to Mother Nature. In an affluent
area such as San Francisco, artificial waterfalls are a common
way of embellish how a place looks. This waterfall is the façade
to the entrance of a condominium complex in South San Francisco.
With today’s economy, the need for a house is not affected
by the placement of a waterfall. Although this waterfall is seemingly
harmless, it runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, wasting energy
and water. Also, the waterfall took money to construct and takes
money in order to maintain. This water, energy and money can be
allocated to much more efficient uses such as helping the large
homeless population in San Francisco. Water and energy is a necessity
for life, and the wastefulness of it exemplifies the attitude
affluent people have on money.

A homeless man sits, eyes held shut, in an attempt to hide himself
from the jubilant faces of those around him. Satisfied shoppers
walk along the famous Haight Street sidewalk, seemingly blind
to the poor man's existence. He attempts to tell others their
fortune, yet he clearly has no fortune of his own. Herein lies
the paradox. In an affluent society, poverty exists, but it goes
unseen. “I don’t think we did go blind, I think we
are blind, Blind but seeing, Blind people who can see, but do
not see.” – Jose Saramango, author of Blindness.

This picture shows a tree in the background the popular bulls
eye logo of Target. I see the bunch of red carts symbolizing the
mass production and over production of products that target sells
to the customers. In my picture the message comes across and shows
: Mother nature vs. man, Nature vs. Corporations. Also in my picture
shows the clash of Nature alongside Manmade objects ,the two things
clash like Oxy morons in this picture. I know I’m not a
tree hugger but I was a bit surprised when I saw a couple trees
outside the Serramonte mall like the one in my picture! The truth
that we know that trees today especially in cities are being cut
down everyday to make new stores, offices and etc. that’s
why I chose this picture how it is symbolizing the Mother nature
vs. Manmade objects/corporations struggle going on. Also the message
I try to show in this picture has to do with how there are tsunamis
and earthquakes going on in other parts of the world how mother
nature is more powerful no matter what, therefore the tree symbolizes
the strength and power it has over us. No matter what we cant
control nature and the outcomes it will bring to us humans. |

This homeless man sleeps in front of Tiffany
& Co. jewelry store in San Francisco's famed Union Square. After
the great earthquake of 1906, Union Square became San Francisco's premier
shopping district. Hotels at Union Square cost more than elsewhere in
The City and high-end stores have resided there for years. The Levi
Strauss store will even custom make jeans for you. Tiffany's, a symbol
of luxury or the ability to buy what you want, contradicts the poverty
and hopelessness of the growing homeless population in San Francisco.
San Francisco is believed to have the largest homeless population of
any major city.
