E-Mail Discussions
("Lists")
- Groups of people
with common interests have on-going discussions via e-mail
- All subscribers
to a group automatically receive all messages sent to the
group
- "Moderated"
groups have human manager
- Various Web
sites list e-mail
discussion groups by topic or keyword
Usenet Newsgroups
- Similar to e-mail discussion
groups, but use "news readers" instead of e-mail
- Many more & wider range of
groups
- Newsgroup postings can be
viewed directly (no e-mail subscription needed)
- Newsgroups are organized into
a hierarchy of topics, e.g. soc.culture.african.american
- Newsgroups are searchable
& accessible from Web sites
Internet Chat
- Real-time (live) text-based
discussions
- Separate IRC client (program)
needed (separate from Netscape)
- Web-based chat sites are
becoming increasingly popular
- IRC discussions organized into
"channels" on different servers
- Hard to find decent quality
channels- mostly social, recreational
Telnet
- Older Internet format that
enables users to "logon" to remote computer systems
- Most common use: provides
access to thousands of libraries worldwide and hundreds of
specialized databases
- Requires helper software to
work w/ Netscape

- Older Internet format that
enables users to retrieve ("download") computer files from remote
computers; also to send ("upload") files to servers
- Most common use: to download
computer programs, graphics, audio and video files
- Netscape downloads FTP data
& displays it as folder and file icons (does not
upload)
- To upload, use
- WS-FTP (Windows)
