Directions
for creating audio files for the segments you select
If working at school, you need
to use a USB flash drive.
1. Before you begin using Audacity
to export audio to MP3 files, you need to save the lame_enc.dll file into the same folder in which you will save your
audio segments. To do this:
- Click this link: lame-3.96.1 (If this link doesn’t work, go to the LAME download page
and click on another link with the same name: lame-3.96.1.)
- You will then be asked to save the file.
Click save and save the file
(named lame-3.96.1.zip) to the same
folder in which you will save your audio segments.
- After saving the lame-3.96.1.zip file, you need to go to the folder in which you
saved the file and double-click this zip file. Double clicking on the lame-3.96.1.zip file will create a new folder
called lame-3.96.1. The lame_enc.dll
file will be in this folder.
2. If working at school, turn on a computer in the demonstration area.
3. Put your CD in the CD
drive (top drive). (Press the button next to the drive to open and close the
drive.)
4. Put your USB flash drive in
the USB slot. (In the demonstration area
computers, the USB slot is in front of the computer. Lift up the front cover to
access it.).
5. Start Audacity. (On the demonstration area computers, click on
the >>> on the bottom quick launch task bar Audacity icon.
[If asked: “What do you want
Windows to do? about audio files, click CANCEL.]
6. After the Audacity
program starts, select Open
from the File pull-down menu.
Your file should be shown on
the CD (Y:) drive.
[If
the Y: drive is not shown, click in the “Look in” pull-down menu and find the
Y: drive, then find your file.)
7. Click on your file and
click OPEN. Loading may take a minute or
so.
8. Listen to your interview
and create your audio log (if you have not already done so.)
9. Select audio segments to
save as separate files by highlighting the audio segment and then select Export Selection as MP3 file
from the File pull-down menu. Try to keep segments under about 3 minutes
in length and about 10 - 20 minutes total for all segments.
10. Change the file name
from your name, to something that would briefly identify what the
segment is about, with no spaces, e.g. whycame.mp3 . Always end the file name with .mp3
11. Click on “Save In” pull-down menu and select:
Removable disk (E:)
12. Double-click on the folder
in which you want to save your audio segments.
13. Click Save.
14. The first time you
export a file as MP3, a dialog box will be displayed that says:
“Audacity
does not export MP3 files directly….
Would you like to locate lame_enc.dll now?”,
click YES.
15. Then browse to the lame-3.96.1 folder (which you saved and
extracted earlier), find the file name: lame_enc.dll
and double-click on it.
Your segment should be saved.
If you want to cut some
audio from the beginning or the end of this new file, you can open this file
with Audacity, cut the part(s) that you want and then select Export as MP3 file from the File pull-down menu and save the
exported file with the same name as previously used. You will be asked if you want to replace the
previous version of the file. Click YES.
Repeat steps from #9 on for
all additional audio segments.
(You should not have to repeat steps 14 and 15 again.)
