After you have completed the Placement Tests and the College Orientation and Registration Session you are ready to meet with a college counselor. Counseling services are typically very impacted the two weeks prior to the beginning of the Fall semester (August 4 through August 19), and for Spring semester (January 2-January 21). Please try to complete the matriculation/registration process prior to the first day of class if possible. If you come in to use services during this peak time be prepared to wait for drop-in services.

Educational Counseling Services

Counselors are available to assist students with their educational, career, and personal goals. Educational Counseling Services are designed to:

  • Help students make decisions and set educational and career goals
  • Provide academic program planning to complete certificate, associate degree, and/or university transfer programs
  • Help students evaluate current academic readiness and plan coursework to build skills
  • Assist students to use campus services and resources
  • Evaluate transcripts from other American colleges and universities for credit applied to certificates and degrees at Cañada College
  • Teach students important skills, strategies, and techniques to enhance classroom and academic success
  • Work with students to resolve personal concerns that may interfere with the ability to succeed

Note:

It is highly recommended that at least once a semester, schedule an appointment to meet with a Counselor to discuss progress toward your academic goals, develop or update your STUDENT EDUCATIONAL PLAN (SEP), and learn about important student services that enhance student success. Student Educational Plans must be completed within the first 15 units completed.

Counseling services are available via:

  • Individual counseling
  • Orientation Sessions (for new students)
  • Electronic Counseling (available to current students)
  • Drop-in (Please be prepared to wait since students are served on a first-come first-served basis)

Students may make an appointment:

  • In person at the Counseling Center (Bldg 1 first floor at the information desk)or

  • On-line: Log into WebSMART, click on Student Tab, then Student Services Appointment, then Cañada College Counseling appointment

No Show Policy:

Students who do not show or are 10 minutes late to the counseling appointment will be marked as "NO SHOW" on the their record.  After two missed appointments (NO SHOWS) students will then be limited to using drop-in services as they are made available for the remainder of the school year. If the student is unable to keep the appointment, it is his/her responsibility to cancel the appointment.

The primary goal of Career Services is to assist students to develop and carry out both short- and long-term employment and career goals. Services provided include:

  2. A resource library of career exploration and job hunting books detailing preparatory education and training and labor market trends for career areas

InternMatch is a site geared towards college students to help you get you foot in the doors of careers you are interested in. InternMatch has one of the largest selections of paid and non-paid internships anywhere with a focus on amazing business internships and hard-to-find non-profit positions. All of their expert resources, from downloadable résumé templates to cover letter guides and interview advice are totally free for students. In addition, you can check out InternMatch on Facebook and Twitter to get regular updates on new positions.

Career Cafe

There is also a new website called CA Career Cafe which is partly funded by a grant from the California Community College Chancellor's Office. This virtual career center has lots of resources to help you find your best career path and will take you step by step to discovering and researching your dream career.

Transfer Services

Students interested in transferring to a four-year college or university may use Transfer Services to research universities, majors, academic requirements, college costs, and other transfer issues. Resources include college catalogs, college directories, articulation information, and access to PROJECT ASSIST, a self-guided site that provides general education, major and course equivalency information. You may contact the Transfer Services Program Supervisor at (650) 306-3493 for additional information and service.

  • Upcoming University Visits: During each term university representatives will visit Cañada College to answer students' questions regarding their programs and services that they offer.
  • Cañada College has Transfer Admission Guaranteed/Agreements (TAG/TAA) with the universities listed below. The Transfer Agreement Chart summarizes the minimum requirements and provides information on how to apply for TAG or TAA.

University of California information:

UC Santa Cruz offers, a $20,000 Scholarship, Karl S. Pister Leadership Opportunity Program, to attend UC Santa Cruz in Fall 2012. The 2012-13 application packet is available now. You may submit your completed application packet to Transfer Center at Cañada College in building 9-room 142 by the due date, February 3, 2012, by 12p.m. Late applications will not be accepted.

Intersegment General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a General Education (GE) pattern for UC or CSU campuses. Some of the California Private Colleges and Universities may accept IGETC certification to fulfill their General education requirements.

Transfer In Students

Students who complete lower division courses at another accredited college and/or university may receive unit credit toward a certificate and/or Associate degree. An official copy of the transcript from all colleges/universities attended must be submitted to the Admissions Office to be evaluated. Upper division courses cannont apply toward a certificate and/or an Associate degree.

Transcripts

A request for an official transcript may be downloaded and sent to the Enrollment Services Office for processing.
