Of
MESA high school graduates who are African American,
Latino American and American Indian, 41 percent are
eligible for admission to the University of California.
This eligibility rate is much higher than the statewide
rate of 2.8 percent for African Americans and 3.8
percent for Latino Americans.
In
MAY 2000-01, over 1,040 MESA seniors went on to college. The
largest number in MESA history. Seventy percent of
all MESA graduating high school seniors go on to college,
compared to 49 percent of California graduating high
school seniors.
Of
387 MESA community college students who went on to
four-year institutions in MAY 2001-02, 46 percent
transferred to the University of California, 44 percent
transferred to the California State University, 4
percent transferred to independent California colleges
and 5 percent transferred to out-of-state institutions.
In
MAY 2001-02, of 387 MESA community college students
who transferred to four-year institutions, 100 percent
were math-based majors.
MESA
students receive 74 percent of engineering baccalaureate
degrees awarded to underrepresented students in California.
Nationally,
close to 12 percent of the underrepresented students
receiving engineering degrees are MESA students.
Some
250 companies support MESA through field trips, speakers,
volunteers, internships and other activities. Corporations
and foundations provide more than $11.6 million in
contributions.
