The "Creating Opportunities for Minorities in Engineering, Technology,and Science" (COMETS) program is a collaboration between Cañada College's Engineering Department and San Francisco State University School of Engineering. The project is sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Office of Education through Curriculum Improvement Partnership Award for the Integration of Research into the Undergraduate Curriculum (CIPAIR), Grant No. NNX10AU75G.

Step 2: Have a math, science or engineering instructor complete and submit the Faculty Recommendation Letter.

Program Objectives

Objective 1.  To improve student engagement and success in foundational math courses and core engineering courses; 

Objective 2.  To develop a summer research internship program for community college engineering students at NASA Ames Research Center;

Objective 3.  To provide current community college students a year-long engineering design experience early in their academic career by participating in capstone design courses for graduating seniors at SFSU; 

Objective 4. To strengthen existing faculty relationship with NASA Ames, and establish new collaborative relationships among two-year and four-year engineering faculty, and NASA Ames Research Center;

Objective 5. To improve academic success of engineering students from underrepresented groups by providing academic support and mentoring

Summer Internships for Community College Students

The 10-week COMETS Summer Internship Program will provide nine community college research internship positions. Participating students will be working with faculty from SFSU on NASA-themed research projects. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility
  • Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident
  • Must be an engineering student in one of the following Califonia community colleges: Canada College, College of San Mateo, Skyline College
  • Must have completed at least 24 units of college credit by June, 2011, including first semester Calculus and first semester Physics
  • Applicants for a full-time position must be planning to transfer to a four-year institution as an engineering major in Fall 2012
  • Applicants for a half-time position must be planning to transfer to a four-year institution as an engineering major in Fall 2012 or Fall 2013

*Most research activities will be at the SFSU campus, with regular visits to NASA Ames Research Center

Capstone Design Project for Community College Students

The COMETS project will also provide four (4) current community college students a unique opportunity to participate in a year-long capstone senior design project at San Francisco State University as design team members in SFSU's Engr 696 and Engr 697 courses. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility
  • Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident;
  • Must be currently enrolled at Cañada College as an engineering major;
  • Must be planning to transfer to an accredited four-year engineering program as an engineering major in Fall 2012;
  • Must register for Engr 695 - Independent Studies at Cañada College by August 26th, 2011.
