1. MLA - Modern Language Association Modern
Language Association (MLA) format provides writers with a system for
cross-referencing their sources, from the parenthetical references they
use in their essays to the List
of Works Cited at the end of their essays. This cross-referencing
system allows readers to locate the publication information of source
material. If you are majoring in psychology, sociology, political science, communications, education, or business you may be interested in learning more about APA style which emphasizes the author and year of publication since these fields require cited sources to be current.
The Purdue University site offers handouts for students about the writing process, grammar, spelling, punctuation, research and documentation (including MLA and APA styles), professional writing such as resumes and cover letters, and writing across the curriculum (i.e., incorporating writing into a variety of disciplines.) Internet resources for students include information about searching the Internet, search engines and starting points, online writing resources and information about other online writing labs and online tutoring. 4. Paradigm Online Writing Assistant This site allows students to learn about discovering topics and ideas; organizing essays; revising and editing essays; documenting sources; creating informal, argumentative, and exploratory essays; finding an effective thesis; and providing adequate support. 5. Strunk & White's Elements of Style This site allows students to link to the various chapters of this classic reference book by clicking on the outline headings, which include topics such as usage rules, principles of composition, word choice, and spelling rules. 6. Online! A Reference Guide to Using Internet Sources This site provides detailed advice for citing online sources in MLA and APA formats. On this website, students can search the Collegiate Dictionary and Collegiate Thesaurus. Students can search the online catalog, magazines, and databases for all the libraries on the S.F. Peninsula, including the College of San Mateo Library. |
