Essential things you need to know…
All career decision making starts with you.
Gather information about yourself, your dreams, your ambitions
and your purpose in life. Ask yourself questions that only you can answer. Take self
assessment tests, talk to your career counselor and take stock
of yourself.
Know your resources, especially the assistance
available to you through your College of San Mateo's Career Services
Center. Learn to use the Eureka computerized career information
system. Explore the wealth of information the Internet brings
to you. Check your sources and ask for professional feedback.
Remember your friends, family and teachers are resources too.
Learn to identify your personal barriers and
develop skills to manage those barriers. Take a fresh look at
your learning strategies and create a new challenge. Discover
the thrill of life long learning and mastery.
Rework your decision making process to include
the possible, the imaginative and the improbable. Miracles do
happen when you work hard.
Develop a plan of action and act on it. Include
your counselor, mentor or best friend in on the plan. We all need
a support system, especially when we try new skills and behaviors.
Remember the five skill areas listed below
that all employers look for in your work.
- Communication- both written and verbal
skills
- Computing- both Math and basic computer
skills
- Cooperation- both team work and sensitivity
to diversity
- Creativity- think out of the box and bring
something new to the enterprise
- Critical analysis- ask insightful questions
and think through possible solutions
