Julian Edelman rushed for 217 yards and three touchdowns, and passed for a fourth, as the College of San Mateo football team beat Foothill College 38-28 in Los Altos Hills, the Bulldogs’ first win over the Owls since a 36-0 win in 2003.
Edelman, a true freshman quarterback out of Woodside High, led CSM (1-1 NorCal Conference, 5-2 overall) to an upset over Foothill, which was ranked No.3 in Northern California and No.6 in the state. Edelman’s performance was the second-highest rushing totals in school history. Leonard Morris set the mark of 227 yards in 1987 against San Jose City College.
The Bulldogs fell behind 7-0 on a Jacob French 5-yard touchdown run. French, the state’s second-leading running back, who came into the game with 999 yards, rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries.
But CSM responded by scoring 21 unanswered points. Edelman’s 9-yard run tied the score at 7 before he hooked up with Delbecio Ben for a 47-yard scoring strike. Isa Hines gave the Bulldogs a 21-7 lead on a 5-yard run, his only carry of the game.
The Owls are not one of the top teams in the state by giving up, however. The Owls regrouped and scored two more touchdowns before the half to tie the score at 21.
In the second half, the CSM defense stiffened, allowing only seven points.
The CSM offense, meanwhile, did just enough to pull out the win. After Edelman and French exchanged touchdowns, the Bulldogs took the lead for good on a Gil Hernandez 25-yard field goal. Edelman gave CSM some breathing room with an 8-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.
