CSM Finishes Second in NorCal
Daily Journal

The first community college bowl game in College of San Mateo’s 84-year football history, the Bulldog Bowl, takes place on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m. at the rebuilt College Heights Stadium.

CSM earned the host position in the bowl with a 7-3 regular season record and second place finish in the NorCal Conference, just a game behind City College of San Francisco. San Mateo, now ranked 10th in the state, upset previously ninth-ranked Santa Rosa, 47-42, in Saturday’s regular season finale.

Valley Conference runner-up College of the Sequoias (8-2), which was ranked sixth in the state last week, was selected Sunday by the Commission on Athletics for a rematch with CSM in the Bulldog Bowl. Sequoias spoiled CSM’s home opener on Sept. 10 with a thrilling 42-40 non-conference victory.

COS has the top offense among Northern California’s 35 community college teams, averaging 479.7 yards per game.

San Mateo came within 50 seconds of playing in the Northern California championship game — at home. That was the amount of time left when then top-ranked CCSF scored the winning field goal to edge the Bulldogs two weeks ago.

So, despite losing their season finale to Foothill, CCSF (9-1) will host Reedley (10-0) for the NorCal title on Dec. 3, with the winner going to the state championship in Fresno on Dec. 10.

Against Santa Rosa, freshman quarterback Julian Edelman (Woodside) and fullback Ryan Faumuina (San Leandro) led the Bulldogs back from a 35-21 third quarter deficit.

San Mateo scored 26 unanswered points to take a 47-35 lead with 13 minutes left.

CSM tied the score at 35 on Edelman’s one-yard TD run and two-point conversion pass from Edelman to James Bassett (Irvington). The Bulldogs went ahead for good, 41-35, at the end of the third quarter as Faumuina’s four-yard run ended a long drive.

Faumuina rushed for 173 yards on 29 carries and scored twice. Edelman gained 113 on 24 tries and scored three times. So the duo combined for 53 rushes and 268 yards (of CSM’s 339 yard rushing total).

Edelman also completed 16 of 19 passes for 226 yards and another touchdown. So he had a total offense of 339 yards and four touchdowns. .

Freshman defensive back John Harris (James Logan) intercepted a Santa Rosa pass in the end zone with 5:41 left to stop the last big threat by the Bearcubs.

San Mateo led the NorCal Conference in total offense, 462.2 yards per game, third in the entire north behind only Sequoias and Reedley. The Bulldogs led in rushing yards, 323.2, second in the state only to Allan Hancock (335.9).

Edelman accounted or 2239 yards split nearly evenly between rushing and passing, and accounted for 27 touchdowns. His 1,108 rushing yards fell just 15 short of the school record of 1,123 by Dave Hanson in 1991.

Edelman finished third in the NorCal Conference in rushing with his 110.8 average per game, a notch better than his former Woodside High teammate Tyreece Jacks (95.6), now at CCSF. Faumuina was sixth at 65.0 and Sean Connor eighth (44.6).
