Three CSM All-American Selections
by Fred Baer, CSM Sports News

Two College of San Mateo sophomore offensive linemen, Alexander Reyes and James Tretheway, have been named first team All-America by J.G. Grid-Wire. It marks the first time two Bulldogs players have received that recognition from the Santa Ana-based national scouting service, which covers all 142 two-year college teams in the USA.

Three CSM offensive linemen received recognition. Sophomore Andrew Havili was an honorable mention pick -- among the 25 total offensive linemen in the country receiving recognition.

Tretheway (6-2, 305) is a graduate of El Camino High, Reyes (6-4, 330) is from Santa Clara High, and Havili (6-3, 278) is from Burlingame High.

In addition to completing final exams at CSM this month, the trio is busy squeezing in trips to Division I colleges around the country, which are seeking their services next season.

They spearheaded a Bulldog offense which rushed for 3,232 yards in ten regular season games – 612 more yards than any other team in Northern California and third best in the nation. They helped CSM freshman quarterback Julian Edelman set a new CSM season rushing record. San Mateo’s total offensive average of 462.2 yards per state was fifth best among the state’s 72 teams (headed by state champion Grossmont, 482.9).

College of the Sequoias, which CSM played twice, was the only other college to have two first team offensive selections – quarterback Brent Schaeffer, considered the top JC sophomore quarterback in the country, and OL Ofa Mahetau, the biggest first team pick at 340 pounds. CSM lost to Sequoias, 41-40, in their first meeting, the second week of the season, but defeated the Giants, 41-39, in the Bulldog Bowl last month -- in which Reyes was selected the top offensive player for CSM. (Sequoias had the No. 2 offense in the state, 479.7 yards.)

--- Six of the 13 first team All-America offensive players were either from CSM or the Bulldogs’ opponents, emphasizing that San Mateo played one of the toughest schedules in the country!
