Julian Edelman of College of San Mateo has been voted the most valuable player on the All-State region I football team selected by the California Community College Football Coaches Association in conjunction with the JC Athletic Bureau. CSM offensive lineman James Tretheway completed a sweep of top post-season honors by also being selected to the All-State first team.
Edelman, a freshman quarterback from Woodside High, tops an all-state team that includes the best players from the nation’s toughest conference -- the NorCal Conference – in addition to the Bay Valley and Coast Conferences. The 5-10, 185-pound option QB set a CSM single season rushing record of 1,253 yards in 11 games (including the bowl victory over College of the Sequoias).
He scored 17 touchdowns (one shy of the CSM record of 18 by Sione Tavake in 2003 and tallied 102 points (six short of Tavake’s record of 108). He tied the Bulldogs record of four TDs in one game (against NorCal champion CCSF). Edelman also completed 80 of 169 pass attempts for 1,312 yards and 14 touchdowns. So he accounted for 31 TDs and 2,565 yards as San Mateo posted an 8-3 won-loss record.
Tretheway (6-6, 305) from El Camino High (South San Francisco) was previously recognized as a first team All-America pick, along with OL teammate Alexander Reyes (6-4, 330 from Santa Clara High). Three CSM offensive linemen earlier received Scholar/Athlete All-America recognition: Landon Laurasaitis (out of San Mateo High), Andrew Havili (Burlingame), and Tretheway.
They were responsible for an offense that averaged 462.2 yards per game, including 323.2 yards rushing (60 yards more per game than any of the 34 other Northern California teams could manage on the ground).
The CCCFCA, representing 72 of the nation’s 140 JC/CC football teams, annually announces four regional All-State teams and an All-America team. Edelman and Tretheway also received CCCFCA All-America consideration.
Edelman lost a run-off for the second QB spot on the All-America team to returning All-State quarterback Alex Aispuro of Long Beach. Brent Schaeffer of Sequoias was a unanimous selection at quarterback. Due to the strength at that position this year, coaches awarded their one wildcard position on the 15-man team to a quarterback. Edelman fell just a vote short of getting that spot.
