Coaches Corner - How do Student Athletes Qualify?
by Bret Pollack, Offensive Coordinator

What can the High School Coach do to educate his athletes on the transitions to college:

A famous coach once said, "if an athlete goes to battle for me on the field than I owe it to him to do the same off."

As a student/athlete maneuvers through the transition from high school to college, there are many battles that he will face. These battles can be considered insignificant if the student/athlete is presented with quality information.

It seems that the subject of what is a qualifier vs. a non-qualifier is a topic that seems to be misunderstood. All student athletes should strive to become a qualifier out of high school, whether that means going directly to the 4-year school or continuing their academic and athletic playing careers at a junior college. Here are the four major steps of becoming a qualifier (students who will graduate 2007 or earlier.)

1. 14 Core Courses consisting of the following:

4 Years of English
2 Years of Math (Algebra I or higher)
2 Years of Science
1 Add. Yr of Eng, Math, Science
2 Years of Social Science
3 Years from any of the above

2. Core GPA and SAT Sliding Scale Qualification

3.50 GPA - 420 SAT
3.25 GPA - 520 SAT
3.00 GPA - 620 SAT
2.75 GPA - 720 SAT
2.50 GPA - 820 SAT
2.25 GPA - 920 SAT
2.00 GPA - 1010 SAT
