The Bounce: Stoops talks up Palmer, Tretheway
by John Moredich and Citizen Staff Reports, Tucson Citizen

Look for linebacker Ronnie Palmer and offensive tackle James Tretheway to be impact players for the University of Arizona football team in the fall.

Palmer is not exactly a secret weapon after ranking second in tackles with 69 for UA in 2006.

But coach Mike Stoops said he is playing even better during spring drills.

"Ronnie Palmer has been our most improved player," Stoops said. "He can be a much more productive player for us. He's the key in the middle of our defense. I think he's much more comfortable."

Tretheway was expected to be more in the mix a year ago, but redshirted instead. The former JC transfer from San Mateo, Calif., is involved this year, having moved into Peter Graniello's right tackle spot.

Graniello is being held out of drills because of a shoulder injury.

"I think Tretheway has been one of our most improved players in the weight room, in changing direction and agilitywise," Stoops said. "We thought he would be a great player. He is going to give us competition."

Tretheway is hoping to crack a starting lineup that returns all five starters from 2006: center Blake Kerley, right guard Joe Longacre, right tackle Even Britton, left guard Daniel Borg and Graniello.

Colin Baxter is seeing time behind Kerley at center, while Bill Wacholz and Cody Anderson are playing at the two tackle positions. Redshirt freshman Jovon Hayes is backing up Longacre, and converted defensive tackle Conan Amituanai is playing left guard.

Cornerback Cason: Bring on the passes

Arizona's cornerbacks are not getting much time off, because the Wildcats are throwing the ball extensively this spring.

That's just fine with UA preseason all-American candidate Antoine Cason.

"I like to cover the pass, so it feels good knowing they are throwing the ball around. It tests me," said Cason, a 6-foot, 182-pounder who will be a senior this fall.
