"Mental Imagery In Art
and Science"--an art exhibition and lecture April
2
CSM
will present “Mental Imagery In Art and Science,” a free
art exhibition and lecture by professor Mohsen Janatpour, on April 2
at 7:30 pm in the campus theatre.
Janatpour is a math, physics and astronomy professor at CSM. An accomplished artist as well, he has been delivering special presentations at the College since 1995. The April 2 event will be his 16th. Each one has examined, in some way, the connection between art and science.
He has discussed topics such as “Evolution of an Artist’s Vision: Toward a Unification of Art and Science” and “The Rigor of Art & the Spirituality of Science.” On the latter topic, Janatpour posed and discussed the following question: “What if Rembrandt met Einstein?”
On this April’s topic, he said: "From Michelangelo’s portrayal of David and Goliath on the Vault of the Sistine Chapel to Einstein’s thought experiments which lead to the formulation of the General and Special Theories of Relativity, from the ancient’s models of the universe to the Neil Bohr’s model of the hydrogen atom, mental imagery has played a central, if not the central, role in the development of art and science. Indeed, one can correlate the progress of art and science directly with the human’s progress toward the formation of new mental images."
That is the type of discussion that audiences can expect to hear as Janatpour speaks from stage during his exhibitions with his works displayed, often large and vibrant with color, behind him. Visit his website at www.mohsensart.com and see his works of art and read his poetry. He is also a musician.
Over the last three years, Janatpour has developed a series of works he calls “Symvisios.” In paraphrasing the words of Nelson Goodman, Janatpour said that with his Symvisio artwork he has attempted to "metaphorically exemplify" the union of art and science. Janatpour explained that Symvisio is derived from the Latin “sym,” which is defined as “together,” and the Latin “visio,” which means “view”--and that his “visual compositions run, to some extent, parallel to symphonic compositions in music.”
For more information about the exhibition/lecture, which is being sponsored
by CSM’s Associated Students, Science Club and
Math/Science Division, or on Janatpour, call the professor at (650)
574-6272.

But It's All News You Can Use...
...CSM counselor Martha Gutierrez was recently selected for inclusion in the eighth edition of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, an honor for which she was nominated by a former student....Ruth Carsch, a CSM instructional librarian for the last nine years and a District employee since 1986, concurrently has a custom information consulting practice and is also listed in Who's Who in America.
...Kate Motoyama, a CSM speech professor, has been selected as one of 16 communication faculty members nationwide to lead a national initiative entitled "Communicating Common Ground." The project is designed to foster respect and acceptance through multicultural education.
...Steve Morehouse, CSM's high school relations counselor, is one busy guy. From mid-August 2003 through mid-February of this year, he has conducted 97 off-campus outreach events, including college nights/fairs/workshops, presentations on the community colleges and application workshops. He has also met individually with numerous students, parents and high school counselors. And when he’s on campus he can often be found counseling CSM students in his office.
...The District Board of Trustees has approved the program model for serving students with psychological disabilities in San Mateo County, a collaborative effort between the District and the community. This partnership was brokered by Ernie Rodriguez, a CSM psychology instructor and CSM Psychological Services Tim Stringari, both of whom have long been recognized as leaders in supported education. In fact, the program model, built upon Stringari's earlier work at CSM, has been titled “Transition to College” as a tribute to him. Also, Stringari and Steve Robison, coordinator of CSM Student Activities, developed a leadership for service certificate of completion that was recently approved by CSM’s curriculum committee and ask that the word be shared with students.
...On March 5, four members of the Integrative Learning Project with the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching visited CSM to learn more about community colleges, and specifically, about CSM’s learning communities projects. The group visited several basic skills classes and met with instructors participating in learning communities activities at the college. Mike Burke, professor of mathematics, coordinated the visit.
...CSM Student Activities Office in Building 5 is now selling $.37 U.S. postage stamps at face value.
Research
...The
College's Office of Research has just published a new study
entitled “CSM Students With Bachelor’s Degrees,”
CSM Research Briefs, 13:5, March 2004. This study examines enrollment
trends of students with bachelor’s degrees. The context of this
report is the possibility of a state-wide implementation of a differential
per unit enrollment fee increase for California community college students
who possess a baccalaureate degree—from $18 to $50 per unit or
more. To view the latest brief, click here.
