CSM Campus Improvement Program survey
The
results of the nine-question survey on CSM's Campus Improvement Program
(CIP) were released recently, revealing the sentiments of 170 respondents.
Questions ranged from what facilities should receive the highest priority
to how the campus staff, faculty and administrators would prefer to
receive campus communications on the construction project.
Seven of the nine survey questions were multiple choice, with four offering an "other" open-end response; the other two were strictly open-ended. The survey was conducted by CSM's Office of Research.
Top responses to multiple choice questions
72 percent felt that
the highest priority should be given to the renovation of classrooms
and labs.
61 percent believed that the guiding principle for CIP should be to "concentrate effort to improve a limited number of buildings."
53 percent felt that the "most heavily utilized" facilities should receive top priority and urgency in the renovation efforts. Forty-seven percent felt that the facilities "in most need of repair" should receive top priority.
71 percent of the respondents indicated that they were “very informed” or “somewhat informed” about CIP and its impact on faculty, staff, and students. Only 4% indicated that they were “not informed.”
64 percent revealed a preference to receive campus communications regarding CIP via email.
67
percent agreed that the "expenditure of funds on temporary 'swing
space' for classes and faculty offices should be minimized--even though
it may result in temporary hardship for students, faculty and staff."
54 percent of the respondents were faculty, 38 percent
classified staff and seven percent administrators.
To learn the complete percentage breakdown on the responses to the multiple choice questions and all the responses to the open-end queries, click here.
The strictly open-ended questions were "What kind of additional information (if any) would you like to receive?" and "Other Comments."
CSM to be first to offer a computer forensics program
this fall
Beginning
this fall, College of San Mateo will be the only community college in
the state to offer a certificate of completion in computer forensics.
The cutting-edge program will consist of five courses (13.5 units) and
may be completed in two semesters, preparing students for a variety
of entry-level positions with law enforcement agencies, private security
firms and corporations, to name just a few.
“With
the intense national concern for safety following 9/11 and the growing
use of digital evidence in civil and criminal cases,” said CSM
computer science professor Martha Tilmann, “those with an education
in computer forensics are becoming increasingly sought after in the
employment market.”
Upon completion of CSM’s program, a student will be able to discover, extract and preserve digital evidence consistent with computer forensic protocols in the industry.
Three CSM professors will be teaching the forensics courses: Ron Brown,
Georgia Grant and Melissa Green, all part of a dedicated team of faculty
behind the development of the program.
The certificate of completion program will become part of a soon-to-be
66-unit, two-year A.S. degree in computer and network forensics. Currently,
faculty and administrators are developing the A.S. curriculum and will
ultimately seek final approval from the state.
For more information about CSM’s computer forensics program, visit smccd.net/csmcis, email csmcis@smccd.net or call (650) 574-6327.

CSM
Cares, a quality service program for all the College's classified
staff and managers, held its most recent one-day workshop at
the Foster City Recreation Center on
March 18 for 14 campus employees. The facilitators, CSM's Joyce
Berghoff, Valerie
Anderson and Becky Winchester,
used all new materials and videos to enhance the training. Participants
gave the workshop high marks, each rated category receiving an average
of 47 out of 52 possible points. Categories included "program
application to your job" and
"effectiveness of the facilitators." The following
people join the other 46 employees who have completed the training:
Betty Fleming (Distance Learning); Emy Passion-Gordon (Language Arts);
Ulysses Guadamuz (Security); John Jones (Security); Shana Kudo (PE/Athletics);
Jane McAteer (Nursing); Beth McCarthy (CIS); Jeremy Mileo (Admissions
& Records); Cinthia Menendez (Cosmetology); Chris Rico (Counseling);Gert
Sartor Admissions & Records); Huda Shuhaiber (Library); Laura Skaff
(DSPS); and Theresa Vigilia (Library).
Comments from the participants included:
I enjoyed meeting everyone
and putting names to faces. I feel better connected.
Would highly recommend to
other co-workers
I think more people should
participate in the program
For more information, call Anderson at (650) 574-6105, Berghoff at (650)

...The Parent Advisory Committee has organized a restaurant drawing again this year to raise funds for the Mary Meta Lazarus Child Development Center at CSM. A number of restaurants, including Viognier at Draeger’s, Café Gibraltar, Iron Gate, Hola Restaurant & Cantina, Benihana, Hungry Hunter and La Lanterna, have agreed to donate lunch or dinner for two. The drawings to select the winners of the restaurant gift certificates will take place during CSM’s Spring Fling Week, April 27 through 29. The tickets are $3 each or 2 tickets for $5. The majority of the proceeds from the fund-raiser will go to purchase learning materials and equipment to enhance the children’s curriculum. In addition, parents will use some of the funds to plan special events for families enrolled in the Center. Call (650) 574-6279 for tickets.
...College Vista, the 44-unit faculty/staff housing project that will be built at College of San Mateo, is expected to be completed during the summer of 2005. At this time, the District is estimating that a one bedroom will rent for $825-875 per month; two bedrooms will rent for $1100-1200 per month and the three-bedroom units will rent for $1350-$1450 per month. These prices may change depending on interest rates and final construction costs. Are you interested in renting one of these apartments? If so, please contact Barbara Christensen, the District's Director of Community/Government Relations, at christensen@smccd.net with your name and what type of unit you're interested in, as an "interest list" is being built. All regular employees of the District and adjunct faculty who have taught six consecutive semesters at our Colleges, averaging a 50 percent load over the six semesters, are eligible to apply for this opportunity. Currently, a committee representing faculty and staff are working on an equitable plan for allocating the units.
...A Learning Disabilities Assessment Center (LDAC) orientation will be held on April 20, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm in Building 5's South Cafeteria. The orientation is for seniors graduating from high school who have disabilities. This is an opportunity for them to learn about CSM, complete an application for admissions, receive financial aid information, receive EOPS information, view the orientation video, tour the campus, learn about the type of services DSPS provides, arrange for placement test accommodations and set up academic counseling appointments. Seventy five students are expected to attend.
...Arlene Wiltberger of CSM's Psychological Services is encouraging the College's employees to attend the production of "Horizon Line" at Cañada College on April 20, 21 or 22. Seating is limited so you are encouraged to contact Pat Tyler in the Office of Instruction (650.306.3353) in advance for tickets.
Research
...The
College's Office of Research has just published a new study
entitled “CSM Students With Bachelor’s Degrees,”
CSM Research Briefs, 13:5, March 2004. This study examines enrollment
trends of students with bachelor’s degrees. The context of this
report is the possibility of a state-wide implementation of a differential
per unit enrollment fee increase for California community college students
who possess a baccalaureate degree—from $18 to $50 per unit or
more. To view the latest brief, click here.
