San Francisco's poet laureate will speak at CSM this fall
On September 30, San Francisco's poet laureate devorah major will speak at CSM as part of the fall 2004 "President's Lecture Series: Diverse Voices in Writing." The lecture, beginning at 11:10 am and ending at noon in the campus theatre, will be followed by an author's reception with light refreshments and a book signing in Building 5's Gallery Room.

Major's poetry books include“street smarts,” which was awarded the PEN Oakland 1996 Josephine Miles Award for Excellence in Literature, “where river meets ocean” and “with more than tongue.” A touring performer at various venues in the United States and abroad, the trained actress and former dancer approaches poetry as both a written and performing art.

Publishers Weekly said that “street smarts” is musical, energetic and compelling with major, as a community witness, “pulling hope from painful realities.”

Major is also a novelist and essayist. Her first novel, "An Open Weave," described as eloquent and lyrical, was awarded the First Novelist Award from the American Library Association’s Black Caucus.

Major’s second novel, “Brown Glass Windows,” marks the changes in the African-American community over the last several years. It includes poetry and was the recipient of a 2002 California Arts Council Spoken Word Literary Arts Fellowship award.

In 2002, Daughters of Yam (a poetry performance group she is part of with fellow artist Opal Palmer Adisa) released a jazz poetry CD entitled “The Tongue is a Drum” and launched a website at www.daughtersofyam.com. In 2004, major was commissioned by the Oakland East Bay Symphony to collaborate with composer Guillermo Galindo in creating a symphony with spoken word and chorus elements called “Trade Routes.” It will premiere in 2005.

Major's poems, short stories, and essays have been published in a number of anthologies, and in many magazines and journals, including: The New Progressive, Left Curve, Frontiers, River Styx, Black Scholar, Callaloo, Obsidian, Paterson Literary Review, and Zyzzyva. She has also shared her work on radio and television stations in Northern and Southern California, southern Connecticut, New York City, and Atlanta, Georgia.

The multi-talented major is currently poet-in-residence with both the San Francisco Fine Arts Museum and San Francisco Jazz Festival’s Jazz in the Middle program, which brings jazz, poetry and performance arts to middle school youth. Additionally, she has written two history books for young people: “Rosa Parks: Freedom Fighter” and “Frederick Douglas: A Hero for All Times.”

Again, the lecture series will be made possible by of a generous donation from the Lane Family Charitable Trust.

First community college to offer cutting-edge program in California

CSM computer forensics degree and certificate program approved
CSM received recently the much-anticipated approval from the state of the community college’s Computer and Network Forensics Certificate and A.S. Degree program.

CSM is now the first community college in California to offer the two-year degree, certificate and the fast-track certificate of completion options in computer forensics—all of which are available to students this fall. Upon completion of CSM’s program, a student will be able to discover, extract and preserve digital evidence consistent with computer forensic protocols in the industry. All three will prepare students for a variety of positions with law enforcement agencies, private security firms and corporations, to name just a few.

“This was an excellent example of CSM developing a cutting-edge program,” said Grace Sonner, CSM’s vice president of Instruction. “A great deal of credit is owed to the dedicated faculty who, along with staff and administrators, made this happen.”

CSM computer science professors Martha Tilmann, Ron Brown, Georgia Grant and Melissa Green worked as a team to develop the program.

For more information about CSM’s computer forensics program, email csmcis@smccd.net or call (650) 574-6327.

But It's All News You Can Use

In General

...The Opening Day remarks of CSM Acting President Pat Griffin and Academic Senate President Tom Diskin can be found in the Reference section linked at left. Both spoke in the campus theatre last Monday to the College's staff, faculty and administrators.

...CSM Acting President Pat Griffin is encouraging staff, faculty and administrators--especially those who provide assistance to students--to familiarize themselves with the College's Web site (collegeofsanmateo.edu). She particularly urged personnel to look at the WebSMART link section "as there are new and improved technology enhancements coming up all the time." For ease in finding new and already existing information on the Web site, use the "Quick Links" or "Search" features on the home page.

...Henry Villareal, dean of Enrollment Services, released last week the first-day-of-the-fall-semester enrollment report and CSM's student count is down three percent compared to the total at the same time last year. That's 311 students (10,215 in 2003 to 9,904 in 2004). The District's enrollment is down slightly by 1.1 percent. Across the District, evening enrollment was down. At CSM the decrease was 5.7 percent. But unlike the other colleges, CSM's day enrollment (by 1.6 percent) was also down. The official "snapshot" for fall enrollment is the census report, due to be released in early October.

...CSM's Student Employment Office can advertise current campus job openings. To list available positions, the College's divisions, departments, programs and services are encouraged to contact Krystal Romero at Romerok@smccd.net or (650) 378-7223.

...All faculty, staff and administrators are invited to CSM's Ice Cream Social & Services Awards on Tuesday, September 21, from 12:30 to 2 pm, in Building 5's Staff Dining Room. Sponsored by the President's Office and the College's managers, CSM faculty and administrators with 10, 20 and 30 years of service will be honored. A list of honorees will be included in the next edition of CSM Internal.

...As you may have noted, CSM Internal has a new "publishing" schedule. In the fall, as it was in the summer, a new edition will appear every other week instead of weekly. Expect to see an updated CSM Internal on the following dates: September 6 (actually September 7 the 6th is the Labor Day holiday) and 20; October 4 and 18; November 1, 15 and 29; and December 13. Progress is also being made on CSM Internal's new look (see the June 28, 2004 edition in News Archive linked above), with the launch of an improved site scheduled for sometime in September. As part of the new look plan, CSM Internal's Reference section linked at left has been reorganized so readers will have an easier time finding items such as this year's College Goals and Action Steps.

...Recently, Helen Walker of CSM's Public Relations and Marketing sent out a call for CSM Heart Walk 2004 team members. As of last Friday, 13 have signed-up. This year the goal for the squad is to raise $1,200. The three-mile (leisurely) walk, held at Electronic Arts in Redwood Shores, will begin at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, September 9. It will culminate with a post-event lunch that will end around 1:30 p.m. Individual eligibility for the lunch is based on raising a minimum of $60. Participants will don "Team CSM" t-shirts and carpool to Electronic Arts. To join the team or to donate to this worthwhile cause, contact Helen Walker at walkerh@smccd.net or (650) 574-6269.

...A link to the recently-released schedules of CSM's sports teams can be found in the Calendar section linked above.

Research
CSM's Office of Institutional Research produces "Research Briefs" and conducts and provides results of surveys, such as the recent one on the campus facilities improvement program. And it's involved in a number of other research efforts. To review its research, visit the Office's Web site through the Research section at left. Other research information, including "Facts and Figures about Community Colleges," can be found in that section also.

Please tell Students

Student Online Information Center: A new online information center for students began operation last week in CSM's Building 5, near the vending machines in the Cafeteria. Located next to the Student Employment Office, the center provides access to information about CSM via the Web with two state-of-the-art computers. It's staffed by at least two employees and is open Mondays through Thursdays, 8:30 am to 7 pm, and on Fridays, 8:30 to 3 pm, through at least the "high activity" time of the fall semester. The center can be especially attractive to students who don't want to wait in long lines to obtain information such as how to register for a class, who is eligible for financial aid, where is Building 14, where is student parking and does CSM offer courses in graphic design. Online, the students can actually register for classes and pay certain fees. They can even receive educational counseling using "e-adivising" online. Plans are underway to open a center in Building 14. For more information about this service, contact (650) 574-6563.

Associated Students: The Associated Students of College of San Mateo (ASCSM) will present"CSM Welcome Week," an introduction to the College's student services and programs, from August 23 through 26. At various tables around the reflecting pool in front of the Library, CSM representatives will be present from the Counseling Center for Educational, Career, and Transfer; CSM Connects, Extended Opportunities Programs & Services (EOPS); Financial Aid; the Health Center; the Library; the Student Activities Office; the Student Employment Office; and ASCSM, the College's student government.

CSM Web Site: This fall semester's short course list is up on the College's Web site, under "Campus Notes" on CSM's homepage.

Transfer Center: During the week of August 23, university representatives from University of Phoenix, UC Davis, UC San Diego and San Francisco State University will be on campus. Please visit collegeofsanmateo.edu/transfer for complete information on CSM Transfer Center August through October events, meetings, workshops and university representative visits, including the Transfer Club meetings every Monday, from between 12:10 to 1:00 pm in the Career Center (Building 5, Room. 128). Transfer Center events this fall include Engineering Major Day on September 13, Transfer Day on September 20, Biological Science Major Day on October 12 and Degree Programs for Working Adults College Faire on November 1. Mike Mitchell, the Center's coordinator, is available to answer questions and for classroom presentations. His contact information is (650) 574-6662 or mitchellm@smccd.net.

Cooperative Education: Most CSM students work at either full or part-time jobs or may participate in an internship or volunteer assignment, but many of them are not aware that they can receive academic credit (two to four units) for this work through the College's Cooperative Work Experience (Coop) program. Coop is a great way for students to earn academic credit for the work they do whether paid or unpaid, internship or volunteer, career or seasonal, or on campus or in the community. Coop can complement classroom curriculum, give students academic credit for work performed, enhance a student’s GPA (since Coop can be taken multiple times and students receive letter grades) and is CSU transferable. The Student Employment Office would like to visit your class to make a brief five-minute presentation to your students about Coop. To reserve a date for a presentation at your day or evening class in the next few weeks, please contact obrien@smccd.net or (650) 574-6619. If interested, a more extended presentation about other career services is available. Also, students can visit the following Web site for more information about Coop: http://www.smccd.net/accounts/csmemploy/cooperative.html.

Student enrollment fees: Effective this fall, the student enrollment fee is $26 per unit. The last day to drop classes with eligibility for student fee refunds is Tuesday, August 31, 2004, for semester-long classes or 10 percent of class meetings for short courses.

Campus services:
Food Service at the
Main Cafeteria this fall semester will be provided Mondays through Thursdays, 7 am to 2:30 pm, and on Fridays, 7 am to 2 pm; the Kiosko will be open Mondays through Thursdays, 7 am to 8 pm; and on Fridays, 7 am to 2 pm. Café International will open sometime in September, with its days and hours announced then.

Please visit the Reference section at left and click on "Schedules of campus services"
for this fall semester's normal days and hours of CSM student services such as Admissions and Records, the Cashier's Office and the Bookstore. This information may also be accessed while on CSM's Web site. Go to the the Students Services homepage at http://collegeofsanmateo.edu/webservices/. Once there, click on "What, When, Where."

And some services have special early semester hours.
During the week of August 23, the Bookstore will be open from 7:45 am to 9 pm Monday through Thursday, from 7:45 am to 3 pm on Friday and from 9 am to 2 pm on Saturday. Until September 3, the Cashier's Office will also be opened in the evenings from 5 to 7:30 pm, Mondays through Thursdays, in addition to its normal hours.
