Who will be on this year's CSM College Council?
For the 2004-05 academic year, CSM's College Council members are as follows, with the new representatives in bold: Linda Avelar , Diana Bennett , Joyce Berghoff, Shannon Chan , Tom Diskin, Chris Eden, Patricia Griffin, Mike Habeeb, Tim Karas, Cynthia Liang , Mike Mitchell, Annette Perot, John Smith , Grace Sonner, Thurman "Skeet" McGinnis and Henry Villareal.
The College Council, a shared-governance advisory body, met for the first time this academic year on Wednesday, September 1. The agenda can be viewed in the Committees section linked at left. A summary of the meeting will appear there soon.
The College Council consists of members of every constituency group on campus, including students, classified staff, faculty and administrators. Its meetings on the first and third weeks of the month begin at 2:15 pm in Building 1, Room 115, and are open to the campus at large. No voting takes place at College Council meetings; instead, items are adopted by consensus.
Also, the College Council has important subcommittees such as the budget and strategic planning subcommittees.
Latest report show steady enrollment at CSM
by Henry Villareal, interim vice president of Student Services and the dean of Enrollment Services
Here is the latest fall 2004 enrollment data as of August 31, the end of the drop and add period. In comparison to last year at this time, the District is reflecting an overall decrease of -1 percent or 259 fewer students.
By college, CSM presents a decrease of .4 percent or 47 fewer students (11,064 to 11,017); Cañada College reflects a decrease of 1.2 percent or 68 fewer students; and Skyline College demonstrates a decrease of 1.7 percent or 144 fewer students.
The decrease for each of the colleges and subsequently for the district continues to be reflected in evening student enrollment. Fewer course sections as impacted by budgetary constraints is a possible factor for the decrease.
Though the District is down in overall enrollment, the decrease is minimal, particularly given the considerable enrollment fee increases of the past two years. Fortunately, the colleges' Financial Aid Staff have done a tremendous job in communicating to students the availability of financial aid. It is very likely that each of the colleges will reflect a significant increase in students applying for and receiving financial aid when compared to last year and especially in comparison to two years ago.
Lastly, as many of you know, Census Day is September 7. A final census enrollment report, which serves as the official snapshot of the District's enrollment, will become available in early October.
Bulldogs play for first time on CSM's new football field, win
CSM's football team played on the College's new football field for the first time last Saturday in its season opener against Chabot College, winning 25-6. The photo at left was taken at a scrimmage last month and shows a wide-open view of east San Mateo County that spectators can enjoy while watching the team play. Take note of the giant Bulldog logo on the 50-yard line of the synthetic-turf field. In one end zone, "San Mateo" is written in large white letters. "Bulldogs" covers the end zone at the other end. For a schedule of the football team's season, visit the Calendar section linked at the top of this page.
