Faculty can now create "office cards" online
A message from CSM's Office of the Vice President of Instruction
Attention faculty members! Forget the old paper office cards because we have gone digital to make your lives easier! No more worries of sending in "revised" copies when your schedule changes; everything can now be done online.
District Web Analyst Jasmine Witham has designed a user-friendly Web application that will allow faculty members to create their own office cards. The site officially begins running today, October 4, on the District's portal page, and will require faculty members to log on using their email usernames and email passwords.
(Note: If you do not have an email username and password, NOW is the time to request one. Have your dean/manager go to the email request Web site at http://www.smccd.net/accounts/bereq/ to request an account for you.)
Here are the advantages of creating office cards online:
* You can create several cards per semester as schedules change!
* You can print the door cards to post on your office door!
* Your students can have access to your door card information from home!
* Students/staff can search the door cards to find out when you're available!
If you need assistance in creating your online office card, there will be a multimedia tutorial available on the faculty office card site, showing you how quickly you can create your new card. You can also contact CTL Coordinator Julie Sevastopoulos (650.574-6598) for help.
Give the online service a try by entering in your fall semester information and see just how fast, simple and efficient this new process is!
More about CSM diversity lecture series next speaker
Maxine Hong Kingston , an award-winning author and a senior lecturer for creative writing at UC Berkeley, will speak at CSM on October 20 as the fall 2004 "President's Lecture Series: Diverse Voices in Writing" continues with its second installment.
Kingston won the National Book Critics Circle Award for The Woman Warrior, a chronicle of her experience growing up Chinese American. She received the National Book Award for China Men, a history of Kingston's family in America. Tripmaster Monkey, her first novel, was the winner of the 1989 PEN West award in fiction.
The author was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, received the National Humanities Medal and was selected the California Alumni Association's 2000 Alumna of the Year.
Additionally, Kingston was honored with the title of Living Treasure of Hawai'i.
Her other published works include Hawai'i One Summer, a set of personal essays originally written for the New York Times , The Fifth Book of Peace, To Be The Poet, The Literature of California: Native American Beginnings to 1945, Volume 1 and Conversations With Maxine Hong Kingston.
Kingston's connection with UC Berkeley began in 1957, when as a high school senior in Stockton she won her first award for writing, given by the university. She then obtained her undergraduate degree at the school in English literature in 1962 and her teaching credential in 1964-65. She has been a senior lecturer in UC Berkeley's English department since 1990.
The author was born and grew up in Stockton, California, with her Chinese immigrant parents and her five younger American-born siblings. English is her second language. In 1962, she married Earll Kingston, also an undergraduate at UC Berkeley, and the couple had a son in 1964. Maxine Hong Kingston has lived in Stockton, Berkeley and Oakland, California, and in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Kingston's talk will start in the theatre at 11:10 and will immediately be followed by refreshments and book signings in Building 5's Gallery Room. Again, the lecture series is being made possible by a generous donation from the Lane Family Charitable Trust.

Are you looking for assistance with a spring 2005 graphics project?
by Eileen O'Brien, coordinator of CSM's Student Employment and Cooperative Work Experience
Need help creating a brochure, pamphlet, or other print piece for your department? Why not consider having a CSM graphics student assist you with the project!
CSM's Graphics, Student Employment, and Public Relations & Marketing departments have teamed up for a second time to provide assistance to those at CSM who would like help with the design and development of marketing/informational print pieces, such as: brochures, pamphlets or other large-scale pieces.
Last spring, four CSM departments/programs received help from graphic student interns in the development of their program brochures and fliers.
We would like to expand the program for next spring by assisting even more departments. This is how the process works:
CSM programs/departments are solicited for graphic project requests (see below)
Requests are reviewed by a committee comprised of Student Employment, Graphics, and Public Relations staff
A few projects (5- 7) are selected for development
Graphic students will be recruited and screened by Student Employment and Graphics departments for internship project assignment
Once assigned to a client department, interns will receive direction and guidance from the client department to ensure that project deadlines, budget and concepts are met
Interns will also interface with both the Graphics and Public Relations departments to ensure consistency of quality and that corporate identity are maintained
Students will enroll in Cooperative Work Experience which allows the student to receive academic credit for their work. It also allow a Coop instructor, who will meet with both the student and client, to ensure that student learning objectives are developed and met
This program is the perfect opportunity for you to get that informational piece completed and to help a CSM students develop their graphic skills and portfolios. If you are interested in being considered, please take a moment to reply to this message with the following information:
