On December 8, from 11:30 am to 1 pm, the CSM's Holiday Reception will be held on campus in Building 5's Staff Dining Room. For all the College's faculty, staff and administrators, the event will feature festive appetizers and beverages. The party is hosted by CSM's Office of the President, Classified Planning Committee and the Academic Senate. No R.S.V.P. is necessary.
A look at this year's CSM student representatives
CSM's student government this year is comprised of five executive officers and 20 senators. Together, these CSM students are participating to improve the campus for the entire student body.
Thanks to the special efforts of Fauzi Hamadeh and Dorothea Widmer of the College's Student Activities Office, CSM Internal is featuring all of the 2004-05 student representatives in the Meet a Student section linked at the top of this page.
Photos and brief biographies of the representatives will provide the entire campus an opportunity to match names with faces and offer a glimpse of who these students are.
Bulldogs playing in Silicon Valley Bowl this Saturday
CSM's football team, at 6-4 overall and playing in one of the most competitive community college conferences in California, was selected to play in this Saturday's Silicon Valley Bowl against Foothill College.
At Foothill, the came will begin at 1 pm. For information about tickets, contact (650) 574-6461.

. Fred Berry , a CSM music professor of many years, an accomplished musician and a musical director, will be leading the Stanford University's jazz orchestra on November 19 in the campus theatre. Beginning at 8 pm, the event is titled Fall Into Jazz and will feature the vocals of the renowned Margie Baker. The theatre doors will open at 7:30 pm. Tickets--$15 or $8 for students with I.D.--will go on sale in CSM's Student Activities office in Building 5, beginning November 3. Tickets may also be sold at the door on the night of the performance, subject to availability. Presented by CSM Ethnic Studies Society, the concert is a fundraiser for the North Central San Mateo Twilight Basketball Youth Crime Prevention Program. With any questions regarding the event, call Dr. Zelte Crawford at (650) 574-6145 or the Ethnic Studies Society at (650) 574-6205.
. Khaled Hosseini , born in Afghanistan, is a physician living in Northern California. On November 30 in the campus theatre, beginning at 11:10 am, Hosseini will speak as the "President's Lecture Series: Diverse voices in Writing" continues with its third and final fall 2004 installment. The presentation will be followed by refreshments and book signings in Building 5's Gallery Room. For more information about the author, see the November 1, 2004 edition of CSM Internal linked in the News Archive section above. The lecture series is being made possible by the Lane Family Charitable Trust.
... Put a name with a face and find out more about Gary Booker of Student Services and Meghan Sweeney of the Language Arts Division in the New Staff section linked above . Also, previously having worked in CSM's multimedia center, Steve De Gracia (in photo) is now with the Information Technology Services. And Manny Granillo has come from Skyline College to serve as the interim supervisor of Custodial and Grounds at CSM. Plus, former Student Services intern Martin Bednarek is on a part-time assignment in the Counseling Center this semester, filling in for Elaine Burns who is on a reduced workload.
... The Associated Students of CSM is once again sponsoring its annual Food, Toy & Clothing Drive. Donation barrels are located on campus in Buildings 1, 5, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14 and 16. Please drop off non-perishable food, new unwrapped toys and clothing donations before December 10. All donations will go to the Second Harvest Food Bank of San Mateo County. For any questions, contact Fauzi Hamadeh at (650) 574-6141.
... At a recent CSM Management Council meeting, Sue Roseberry of the College's DSPS reported on the following items : a new Braille booklet containing CSM's campus map (with construction zones) and all related info (parking, elevators, etc.) is now available and DSPS's completion of the closed-captioning of all videos in the campus archives. Roseberry also requested that faculty members have all their materials processed by her office by contacting Aileen Conmigo (650) 574-6438.
... Three CSM students--Stephanie Cheung, Irina Druker and Eric Lin-- received scholarships from the California Society of CPAs (Peninsula Chapter) on November 6. The recipients were selected based on their academics and extra-curricular activities.
... Photos and information about CSM's World Language Week events, which took place on campus during the week of October 25, can be seen at http://gocsm.net/frenchclub/wlw04.html. In photo at left, foreign language professors Richard Castillo and Susan Petit are preparing a table for French, Spanish and Mexican cheese tasting. Held on campus, World Language week offered films, speakers, slides, activities and food and refreshments. Featured languages included Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.
... Arlene Fajardo of Admissions & Records (A&R) notes that the implementation and ongoing use of imaging technology in A&R has been quite successful with thousands and thousands of documents having been electronically scanned and indexed. More than 16 four-drawer file cabinets have been emptied of their paper contents. This enhanced technology, with thanks due to Information Technology Services, provides A&R staff, counselors and others easy access to student records and related documents from their desk top computers. Thus, the need to request paper documents from A&R is becoming more and more obsolete.
... CSM Social Science Professor Minu Mathur and 25 of her students participated in a service learning project in October to raise money for Home of Hope, a charity that supports orphaned children in India. More than $100,000 was raised at the event,
which was attended by about 650 people in San Jose, California. The sociology students received extra credit for their participation. Service learning, promoted by a number of CSM professors and the CSM Connects program, has been described by Former U.S. Senator and astronaut, John Glenn, as "academics in action." For example, cleaning up a river is service. Sitting in a science classroom, looking at water samples under a microscope is learning. Students taking samples from local water sources, analyzing the samples, documenting the results and presenting scientific findings to a local pollution control agency is service-learning. In the photo at left from left to right are CSM students Orlando Lacayo, Jay Anderson, Linda Rozzi and Robert Vorgal (front), professor Mathur, and CSM students Lisa Salvucci, E. Jones, Christina Kho, Rinkel Ray and Angela Sanchez. In photo at right from left to right are professor Mathur and friend Shilpi Minocha dancing in Indican cultural attire.

In Memoriam
From the Office of CSM's President
It is with great sadness that I report that on October 29, 2004, Jean Fredricks passed away peacefully at her home in San Mateo; she had recently been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS/Lou Gehrig's disease). She retired from CSM in 1995 after 25 years of service.
Jean grew up in the Bay Area and spent time in Hawaii and Washington. She attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts. Jean came to CSM in 1970 as an instructional aid in the Language Arts Division. In 1974, she became the tutor coordinator of the Learning Center, a position she held until her retirement in 1995. In her work at CSM, Jean is remembered for innovative ideas she developed for the Learning Center and her advocacy of students requiring tutoring services. She served as a mentor to numerous student tutors who worked for her, and as a result of their experience with Jean, many of them chose teaching careers. Upon her retirement, a redwood tree was planted on the CSM campus in Jean's honor.
In her retirement, Jean enjoyed traveling and made several trips to Europe. She was an avid gardener, cooked wonderful meals for friends and family and loved animals.
She is survived by her sons David, Christopher and Stephen; her son, Michael, predeceased her.
A memorial service for Jean was held on Saturday, November 13 at 1 p.m. at the Community Congregational Church, 1336 Arroyo Avenue, San Carlos.
