But It's All News You Can Use...
... CSM's Nursing Program was recently notified that it is the recipient of a generous bequest from the estate of Margaret Gerlinger, who worked as a nurse in San Carlos. Gerlinger left a promissory note, with a balance of $806,594, bearing interest at 10 per cent per year, to the San Mateo County Community College Foundation to continue her scholarship for nursing students at CSM. The Foundation will receive monthly payments of $8,117 until May 2022.
... Middle College High School teacher Michael Clardy received a $1,600 award recently from the Peninsula Community Foundation for a community service project that included collaboration with the Mary Meta Lazarus Child Care Center. Both the high school and center are located at CSM. The Middle College students researched, designed, built and installed hands-on learning activities for the Center. In doing so, the students worked closely with the Center's director, Louise Piper, to identify the spatial and cognitive needs of the children. The project fulfilled the program's community service requirement of owning a project from start-to-finish.
... On Friday, December 10, Masterwork's Chorale presents "Amahl and the Night Visitors," a one-act holiday opera by Gian Carlo Menotti. The performance will take place in CSM's theatre at 8 pm. Tickets can be purchased by calling (650) 579-5568.
... John LaTorra, a building inspection instructor in CSM's Technology Division , was recently elected to the International Code Council Board of Directors.
... Faculty: DOOR CARDS ARE NOW ONLINE at http://smccd.net/door card. Advantages of the new system include creating several cards per semester as schedules change; printing the door cards to post on office doors; students having access to door card information from home; and students/staff being able to search the door cards to find out when faculty is available. For assistance in creating an online office card, contact CTL Coordinator Julie Sevastopoulos at (650) 574-6598). Faculty is urged to have spring 2005 semester door cards completed by December 15.
... The Fall 2004 edition of CSM Currents , the College's community newsletter, is now online in the Reference section linked at left. It is also on CSM's Web site at collegeofsanmateo.edu.
... The Associated Students of CSM is once again sponsoring its annual Food, Toy & Clothing Drive. Donation barrels are located on campus in Buildings 1, 5, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14 and 16. Please drop off non-perishable food, new unwrapped toys and clothing donations before December 10. All donations will go to the Second Harvest Food Bank of San Mateo County. With any questions, contact Fauzi Hamadeh at (650) 574-6141.
... On the District's Opening Day at the Performing Arts Center in San Mateo, CSEA President Charles Jones presented remarks on behalf of the union. Those remarks are now located in the Reference Section linked at left along with the Opening Day speeches of CSM Acting President Pat Griffin and Academic Senate President Tom Diskin.
... About 100 CSM international students, faculty, administration and staff attended an International "Salad Bowl" lunch sponsored by the College's International Student Program, Associated Students and Diversity in Action Group earlier this month. The event featured various ethnic salads and ingredients for salads, hoping to symbolically e xemplify the cross cultural "Salad Bowl" experience in the United States where different ethnic groups mix but retain their uniqueness. The gathering was held during International Education Week 2004 which, according to a press release from Secretary of State Colin Powell, is promoted by the U.S. Departments of State and Education to"highlight the benefits of international education and exchange; to express appreciation for students and scholars who study and teach here; and to commend millions of people who build and strengthen bridges of international understanding by organizing and participating in exchange programs." Salads and ingredients were donated by local businesses. In photo at left, from left to right, are CSM's Arlene Fajardo (Admissions & Records), Martha Gutierrez (Counseling) and international students enjoying a selection of salads, with Maggie Skaff (International Student Program) in the background. In photo at right, from left to right, are the College's Tim Stringari (Psychological Services) and international students Dorothea Widmer (Switzerland), Jarmila Mahrikova (Slovakia) and Aurelie Le Devdec (France).
... CSM's football team lost to Foothill College 48-28 in the Silicon Valley Bowl on November 20. Both teams were ranked among the top 20 community college football teams in Northern California at the time (Bulldogs at 11, Foothill at 7). The Bulldogs ended the season with an overall record of 6-5, playing in one of the most competitive community college conferences in the state. Final Northern California rankings will be published soon, along with any honors received by CSM's players and coaches.
... Sandra Mellor, the dean of the District's Corporate and Continuing Education Department housed at CSM, reported that the state's community college board of governors recently awarded the District $520,000 to provide training to 4,200 manufacturing employees of United Services, the maintenance and engineering division of United Airlines. The training, offered over the next 18 months, will involve education on a set of principles and practices to reduce cost and cycle time in manufacturing. Also, the grant establishes a pilot training institute at several colleges around the Bay Area with the goal to improve productivity and increase capacity for medium- and small-sized businesses.
Other news
Corporate and Continuing Education and the San Mateo County Human Services Administration (HSA) have partnered to provide educational self-sufficiency training to young people, ages 16 to 18 years old, in foster care placement. Two-hour classes in leadership, money management, career choices and computer technology are being provided at CSM; they started on September 29 of this year and will end on January 20, 2005. The training helps students acquire a "set of competencies" before they leave foster homes as required by federal law. Mellor said that exposure to the campus environment will allow students the opportunity to see college as a real possibility in their future and become familiar with CSM's many programs and services.
In a second project with HSA, Corporate and Continuing Education has developed and implemented the Peninsula Training Collaborative (PTC). It delivers training to non-profit and community-based organizations in San Mateo County that serve children and families in the child welfare system and those at risk of entering the system. The training will be available to professional and paraprofessional staff, including social workers, clinicians, health care workers, foster care providers, volunteers and other staff members who work with the targeted population. A 24-hour program in child welfare fundamentals is offered monthly at sites around the county.
... In the last edition of CSM Internal , it was reported that the fall 2004 version of the PHLIP (the PH otographic LI brary P roject ) is on display in the campus Library's Main Reading Room . The exhibition of 62 of his photos is dedicated to Isago Tanaka, CSM's and the District's photographer from 1964 to 1993.
More info about PHLIP
PHLIP was a major source of photos for the recent KCSM production Voices of CSM, a chronicle of the history of the College from its beginnings in 1922. The production featured the photos and some movie clips, along with on-camera interviews of some present and former CSM personalities.
PHLIP has processed about 1,400 photographs and is continuing its work at a steady pace, as it is now supported by all of the District colleges and the District Office. The recent discovery of several hundred photos of Cañada College buried in the PHLIP stash--those interspersed with some from CSM and Skyline College--makes it possible to expand substantially the Cañada portion of the data base and the Web site presence. Retired CSM Professor Ken Kennedy provided valuable assistance in the initial processing of those photos, and a number of photos from Skyline await processing.
In parallel with the ongoing processing of photos, PHLIP is organizing a sixth exhibit for the Web site (www.gocsm.net/archives and then link to photographs). At present, the Web site comprises five exhibits representing each of the District colleges, the early days and the District office. The sixth exhibit will address current happenings, e.g., pictures of athletic teams, progress of the construction projects at the campuses and the faculty housing project.
The PHLIP Web site (www.gocsm.net/archives) invites viewers to respond via an email link provided or by phone (650) 574-6201 with new data or corrections for description of the photos.
... T he New Staff section (see tab at the top of this page) has been updated. Presently, it contains short biographies and photos of Gary Booker of Student Services and Meghan Sweeney of the Language Arts Division. Soon, more bios will be added. Also, the Meet a Student section (also see tab at the top of this page) has been populated with new information , namely, biographies and photos of CSM's student government: five executive officers and 20 senators.
