... Former San Mateo mayor Claire Mack, a long-time community advocate and broadcasting professional, will be the commencement speaker at CSM's 83rd annual graduation ceremony on May 27. The event will begin at 8 pm on campus in Building 8's main gymnasium. Mack's address is titled Welcome to the World.
It will be a pleasure welcoming Claire back to campus, both as someone who has contributed a great deal to the community and as an alumnus of our college, said CSM President Shirley J. Kelly.
Mack retired in 1998 from KCSM-TV after almost 30 years in television and radio broadcasting. She is the founder and former producer of Jazz on the Hill, a fund-raising jazz concert benefiting the KCSM-FM. Both KCSM-TV and KCSM-FM are located on the College's campus, and the television station devotes its early morning and day programming entirely to CSM college-level telecourses.
In 1991, Mack became the first African-American woman elected to the San Mateo City Council and served three terms as councilwoman and three terms as mayor.
Mack, a native of San Mateo , has continued to advocate for the community as a volunteer on many boards and associations. The Mills Hospital Board of Trustees , North Central Neighborhood Council and American Red Cross Board of Directors are just a few of those organizations.
She has also been the recipient of local, state and national awards, such as the Walk of Honor Citizen of the Year award from the Downtown Association of San Mateo; State of California Women of the Year (1994); and Outstanding Broadcaster from the American Women in Radio and Television (1974).
CSM's 2004-05 graduation class
This year's graduation class is comprised of 402 students, who have completed either A.A. or A.S. degrees at CSM over the 2004-05 school year. They reside in 43 cities in the greater Bay Area, with a majority living in San Mateo . Eighteen are from different countries, including Fiji , Iran , Japan and Peru .
One of those graduates, Joshua Alberto Osequeda, will present the Student Graduate Address to the San Mateo County Community College District Board of Trustees , CSM administrators and faculty and fellow graduates, their families and friends. His talk is entitled Making the Dream of Education a Reality.
Christopher Eden, the outgoing student body president, will receive the Allan R. Brown Outstanding Student Service Award, along with William Kong, Lindsay Moore, Erin Parker Fomby and Marisol Patino-Orozco.
Music will be provided by the San Mateo Elks Band #1112 (a Musical Prelude and, the standard, Pomp and Circumstance) and Masterworks Chorale of San Mateo (Star Spangled Banner and Clap Yo' Hands).
... CSM and the San Mateo County Community Colleges Foundation have joined together to launch Reach for the Stars , a campaign to raise $750,000 for a star projector and other planetarium equipment.
Now under construction, CSM's new science building will house an observatory with a motorized retracting roof and a planetarium. The planetarium's current star projector, however, is more than 40 years old and replacement parts are increasingly unavailable.
CSM's robust astronomy program meets a genuine community need. CSM is one of the few sites in the Bay Area offering community, K-12 and higher education programs in a single planetarium setting. Each year several thousand visitors participate in star-gazing parties, lectures, Astronomy Days and other public events.
Reach for the Stars is currently soliciting donations from private and corporate foundations, public agencies and individuals. One important feature of the campaign is the Wall of Stars. The names of individuals who donate $50 or more will be displayed in the planetarium's foyer. (Campaign logos have been designed by CSM student Patricia López-Hurtado, newly graduated from the graphic arts program.) For information about the campaign or how to make a donation, please visit the following Web site: http://collegeofsanmateo.edu/reachforthestars . Or contact Reach for the Stars project coordinator, Milla McConnell-Tuite , who can be reached at (650) 574-6699 or via email at mcconnell@smccd.net .

... CSM student Silvia Hung and Madge Warren will be featured in "California Community Colleges CalWORKs Portraits of Student Success, 2005." Hung's portrait is in the "An In-depth Look" section, while Warren is in the "Student Reflections" portion.
Included in the publication is a recommendation by Danita Scott-Taylor, director of CalWORKs at CSM, that Hung be featured in "Portraits." It reads:
"Hung began as an ESL student. After her husband left, she raised five children single-handedly. Painfully shy, with limited English speaking skills, Silvia was determined to improve her life, become self-sufficient, and earn a living wage. She returned to school to pursue an accounting certificate. Determined to complete the program as quickly as possible, Silvia enrolled in, and completed 18 units, earning a 4.00 grade point average. With the blessing of her county worker, she continued her education. She has blossomed. Silvia has completed approximately eighty units, maintains a 3.81 grade point average and will transfer Fall 2005. It is an understatement to say she is a hard worker. Those of us who interact with her are inspired daily by her diligence, tenacious and caring spirit. She is a shining example of why programs such as CalWORKs, EOPS/CARE and community colleges exist. The California Community College CalWORKs program provides funds to 106 of the 109 colleges to assist welfare recipient students and those who are in transition from welfare to achieve long-term economic self-sufficiency. To assist these students in improving their marketability, the community colleges offer specific services that support them in obtaining the necessary education and skills to begin and enhance their career growth.
... Five CSM students won first ( Katherine Goebel) , second (Danielle Tran), third place (Eric Savoth ) and honorable mention (Michael W. Conner and Michael G. Zúñiga) prizes for first-year students in the 2005 Grand Concours Universitaire held by the Northern California chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French. The students were enrolled in classes taught by CSM Professors Marilyn Carter and Susan Petit. Another CSM student , John Falxza taught by Carter, won an honorable mention award for second year students. And, in the university/college group of 2005 California Mandarin Speech Contest, student Bruce Engle won second prize. He is enrolled in a class taught by CSM Professor Jing Wu.
... Former CSM student Daniel Zoughbie , currently a junior at UC Berkeley, was recently named recipient of a $10,000 Donald A. Strauss Public Service Scholarship. The Straus scholarships fund public service projects which students propose and implement in their senior year; Zoughbie's project is to establish diabetes micro-clinics in the West Bank.
... Jarmo Siimento, a former CSM student and scholarship awardee, directed and edited the music video "Sahara" that aired this spring on BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). The video features Bohemia The Punjabi Rapper. After leaving CSM, Siimento continued his education at San Jose State University, graduating as the valedictorian of his class with a bachelor's degree in radio, television and film. Born in Finland, he came to the United States in 1999 and has directed and produced more than 20 documentaries, corporate videos and short films. Additionally, he has worked on more than 50 productions as a technical assistant. The films he has worked on have been screened at many festivals, including Sundance.
... Zemad's Journey, a co-production of KCSM and independent Oakland producer Bellay Workneth, has been chosen as the Best Documentary Film by the Santa Barbara African Heritage Film Series for 2005 . More than 200 films competed for this distinction. Last year, Zemad's Journey was nominated for a San Francisco/Northern California Area Emmy in the "Best Documentary" category. KCSM staff Dante Batteo (executive producer) and Josh Springer ( producer) worked on the documentary, which is a narrative adventure about the plight of a girl from a small village in Ethiopia.
... Faculty reminder: Please complete your fall 2005 online office cards before the end of the spring semester.
... Please tell students:
As the semester draws to an end, it may be the best time for students to let CSM know how they feels about programs, classes, services, etc. Now online students can go to collegeofsanmateo.edu/csmstudentsurveys and have their say, and the site is always open for submissions. On the homepage of CSM's Web site, the surveys are accessible under "Campus Notes" > "New CSM Webpages" or by using the "QuickLink" (top left corner of page) or "Search" (top right corner of page) features.
CSMs Library is extending its hours this week, Monday through Thursday, as it will open at 7:45 am and close at 9 pm, rather than at 7 pm. It will maintain its regular hours on Friday (7:45 to 2 pm) and Saturday (9 am to 1 pm).
... Here are photos from some of the numerous end-of-the-semester events that have taken place over the last couple of weeks.
On May 9, during the College's Associated Students Spring Fling, CSM faculty members Rudy Ramirez and James Carranza played the good sports in taking a number of whip cream pies in the face. They were helping raise money for student scholarships for the Alpha Sigma Gamma scholastic honorary chapter on campus. With protective goggles, Ramirez is pictured with two students after a particularly messy "pieing." But is there any other kind?
On May 12, at the Crystal Springs Golf Club in Burlingame, nine CSM employees were among the 22 from the San Mateo County Community College District honored for 25 years of service to the District. At the awards reception, the honorees posed for a photo with CSM President Shirley Kelly. Pictured from left to right are Pat Fitzgerald, Steve Robison, Chris Phillips, Lyle Gomes, Kelly, Susan Estes, Mohsen Janatpour, Bob Hasson Marie Morgan.

On May 17, students from the Mary Meta Lazurus Child Development Center at CSM posed with Vice President of Student Services Pat Griffin. They had presented her with a unique piece of children's art as a means of conveying the appreciation for the support Griffin gives to the children, families and staff of the Center. A three-year-old boy used vibrant watercolors to create a painting for the vice president that he calls Volcano.
On May 18, at a celebratory reception for them in Building 1, Room 115, recently tenured faculty posed for a photo with CSM President Shirley Kelly, Vice President of Instruction Mike Claire, Vice President of Student Services Pat Griffin and Academic Senate President Tom Diskin. ... In conjunction with the San Mateo Area Chamber of Commerce, CSM is conducting an online survey of about 750 business leaders in San Mateo County that asks them to evaluate specific student competencies. When completed, the information will be used in the development of institutional student learning outcome (SLO) statements. Within the first five days, 22 percent of those surveyed responded. When the survey has been completed and responses analyzed, results will be shared with the District Board of Trustees.
... Work by CSM Instructor Claudia Steenberg's Graphic Design students is currently on display in the window case inside the entrance to Building 5 (across from Student Activities office). The exhibit includes work from the following classes: Graphic Design Foundations II (GRA 131), Graphic Design: Theory and Application I and II (GRA 230 and 231) and Publication Design (GRA 225). Tiffany Leong, a local dentist, will be the guest speaker.
The Middle College High School at CSM graduation ceremony will take place on May 31 , starting at 6:30 pm. Twenty five students receive their diplomas as the Middle College's seventh graduating class. CSM President Shirley Kelly and San Mateo Union High School District Superintendent Samuel Johnson will be among those speaking at the event.
... Mike Clardy of Middle College High School at CSM; Louise Piper, coordinator of the Mary Meta Lazarus Child Development Center on campus; four junior Middle College students; and the children from the Center built some play structures for the Center this spring. Together, they learned about conceptualizing, building and the proper use of power tools. To fund the project, the Middle College received a $1600 grant from the Peninsula Community Foundation. This was a service learning project for the Middle College students, developed in conjunction with Bev Madden of CSM Connects.
And today, two construction workers from McCarthy Building Companies, Inc./LPA Inc., the design-build team for CSM's new Science Building, are coming to the Center to work with the four- and five-year-old children to construct a garden arbor for the children's graduation ceremony this week. The arbor will go over the Center's wooden bridge. At the graduation, called Crossing The Bridge, the children walk across the Center's wooden bridge and are presented with a special flower as they move onto kindergarten.
... The next edition of CSM Internal will appear on August 22. During the summer, however, "News Updates" may be sent via email regarding important matters. Also by the fall semester, CSM Internal will have a new, improved look. Readers will see a more streamlined intranet site , resembling in color and feel the College's main Web site. ... CSM's baseball team , ranked third in Northern California, reached the "Super Regional" community college playoffs in Sacramento but lost two one-run games yesterday to the tournament winner Santa Rosa Junior College.
The playoffs began on a promising note last Friday when the Bulldogs beat number sixth ranked American River, 10-4, and hopes were running high for a return to the state championships after CSM beat number seventh ranked Santa Rosa, 5-3, on Saturday.
But Sunday was certainly another day when Santa Rosa, already having lost one game and facing elimination, beat the undefeated Bulldogs, 3-2. That set-up the final game in the double-elimination playoffs. Again, the game was close, but CSM came up on the short end, losing 4-3 and being denied the chance to return to the state finals for the second year in a row. The Bulldogs played for the state crown in 2002 and 2003.
Sunday's losses ended CSM's four game winning streak in the 2005 playoffs. In the first round of post-season play two weekends ago, the Coast North Conference champion Bulldogs handily swept Merced College, winning the first game 13-1 and the second 12-3.
CSM has won the North Coast Conference championship the last four years and has played in the postseason nine of the last 11 years.
