Community informed of CSM administrators' upcoming retirements
Recently, the press release below was sent to various media to inform the public that CSM President Shirley Kelly, Vice President of Student Services Pat Griffin and Dean of Physical Education Division Gary Dilley will retire this year.
San Mateo, CA; February 16, 2006--Dr. Shirley J. Kelly, president of College of San Mateo, recently announced her intent to retire at the end of June. The past 13 years of her 40-year community college career have been at College of San Mateo (CSM) as both vice president of instruction, and most recently as president.
“My years at CSM have been the most enjoyable and fulfilling of my career,” President Kelly wrote in an email sent to all CSM employees last week. “College of San Mateo is one of the finest community colleges in the nation.”
Her six years as president have been punctuated by several initiatives including the implementation and growth of Learning Communities and Student Learning Outcomes, both of which strengthen CSM’s primary mission of educating students to participate successfully in a changing world. As vice president, she was instrumental in establishing and developing San Mateo Middle College High School, a partnership program with the San Mateo Union High School District. Her advocacy and leadership have encouraged growth and an innovative approach to learning.
Kelly has served at the helm at a crucial time in CSM’s history: campus-wide construction is now underway with the passage of Measure C in 2001 and Measure A in 2005. In addition to massive infrastructure work, two new buildings have taken shape under her guidance: the Science Building and the Regional Public Safety Center. These structures will foster CSM’s high teaching standards and allow the school to expand and grow, pedagogically and technologically, with its students. The Science Building marks the first new classroom construction on campus in nearly 40 years.
Kelly holds bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees from the University of San Francisco and Mills College. She began her teaching career at City College of San Francisco as a chemistry professor. An active member in the San Mateo Area Chamber of Commerce and the San Mateo Rotary Club, Kelly also serves on the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Accreditation Teams, and is a member of Board of Directors for the Service League of San Mateo County.
Also retiring this summer are Vice President of Student Services Patricia L. Griffin, Ph.D., and Dean of Physical Education and Athletics Gary Dilley.
Griffin’s career in education also spans 40 years. “I am among those fortunate enough to have discovered my life’s work early,” she said, also in a campus-wide email last week. “I have especially loved my work at CSM for I have had the privilege of serving students and of doing so alongside talented and dedicated staff, faculty and administrators.”
Her 16 years as vice president at CSM have yielded a comprehensive and well-staffed set of student services programs, and a solid partnership between the instruction and student services operations at CSM. Additionally, she has overseen the expansion of health and employment services on campus, as well as the development of new initiatives such as CSM Connects, the school’s volunteer community service program. Under her direction, the programming work has been completed for a new facility to house CSM student support services.
Griffin holds bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Michigan and Syracuse University. Though leaving her current position, she will remain administrative co-chair of the accreditation self-study until that document is completed next spring.
Gary Dilley’s 35-year career in education started at Half Moon Bay High School, where he served as instructor, coach and athletic director. A CSM alum, Dilley also holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UC Santa Barbara and Notre Dame de Namur University. Dilley has served as dean of physical education and athletics at CSM for 18 years, and has overseen the successes of CSM’s outstanding sports teams and the growth of physical education course offerings. Dilley concludes his career at CSM with some notable accomplishments in the realm of athletics facilities: the completion of a new football stadium, baseball field and track.
A look at this year's CSM student representatives
Each year, a certain number of politically-minded individuals decide that they want to become part of CSM's student-government. Most become student representatives to "make a difference" in a variety of ways, including representing a segment of the student population or seeking change in programs, services and activities. This year's crop of politicos is led by President Mario A. Medina, Vice President Karina Orocio, Secretary Yasha Rezaeihaghighi and Finance Director Dima Khudari. In today's edition of CSM Internal, they are featured in the Meet a Student section. In upcoming editions short bios and photos of the senators of CSM's Associated Students will appear. To get to the Meet a Student section, click on the People link on the left side of this page.

Participation is especially sought in this new component. “Get Linked” will be held from 9 am to 1 pm in CSM’s Building 5.

8. The budget subcommittee of CSM's College Council meets periodically over the fiscal year under the leadership of Dean of Administrative Services Virgil Stanford. The group's next meeting is on March 13. The following are the approved minutes of the subcommittee's meeting in November:
Budget Subcommittee Notes
November 28, 2005
Subcommittee Members: Rick Ambrose, Mike Claire, Arlene Fajardo, Jacqueline Gamelin, Shirley Kelly, Maggie Ko, Jan Roecks, Virgil Stanford, Martha Tilmann, Chino Catane, Christianne Marra
Not in attendance: Tania Beliz, Thomas Diskin, Patricia Griffin, Henry Villareal
Virgil Stanford introduced two new committee members: Christianne Marra and Chino Catane.
No changes were made to the meeting notes of October 24, 2005 or the agenda.
Mike Claire updated the committee on the program/proposal to increase enrollment. The three institutions (Cañada, College of San Mateo and Skyline) will be meeting to share their plans and a final decision is expected to be made soon. Some parts of the plan have already been executed (posters around campus encouraging students to register for spring 2006 classes), however Mike indicated that the plan will need to be finalized before further action is taken. Personnel expenditures for a college recruiter and a webmaster (temporary positions) are included in the plan. Mike indicated that the proposed budget for CSM is $768,000 and that the total amount available to the three institutions is $1.5 million.
Virgil Stanford provided the committee with a general budget update. He indicated that the base changed for 04-05 and as a result “one-time” funds are available. Another shortfall is anticipated, however the minimum we will receive is as much this year as we did in 04-05.
Rick Ambrose provided some details about a discussion by the District Budget And Finance Committee related to the allocation of funds among the three institutions. There has been some discussion about possible incentives for receiving funds.
The next meeting date was set for February 6, 2006, by which time the governor is expected to have presented his budget.
The meeting was adjourned.
