Special Summer Edition

A Column of News
Summer officially began last week with sunshine and students back on campus, the energy level of CSM moving up a notch or two. But let's drift back a bit to the College's commencement ceremony in May when CSM President Shirley Kelly was conferred the title of President Emerita; CSM Dean of Physical Education and Athletics Division Gary Dilley (retiring June 30) was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award; and CSM concurrent enrollment student Yan Yan Mao graduated with an associate's degree in liberal arts the week before also graduating from Hillsdale High School in San Mateo and ready to attend Harvard University in the fall. Congratulations to all.

Moving closer toward the present, on June 7, the annual Classified Staff Appreciation Day went off without a hitch, as usual, with a tasty barbeque; entertainment by CSM President Shirley Kelly and Vice President of Student Services Pat Griffin (the Blues Brothers...Sisters??? above) and the all-CSM employee band, the Bulldawgs; and a ceremony honoring staff employees for years of service.

Just a couple of weeks ago, the 9,244 square-foot Walter H. Moore Regional Public Safety Center opened on campus with flair and circumstance. CSM Public Relations & Marketing Director Helen Hueg took photos of the opening, now displayed at http://collegeofsanmateo.edu/rpscopening. The RPSC is named for Moore in recognition of his lifetime commitment to law enforcement in San Mateo County and in recognition of in recognition of a $1 million gift toward construction of the building from the Betty and Gordon Moore Foundation. Gordon Moore, Walter's son and co-founder and current Chairman Emeritus of Intel Corporation, spoke at the event.

The next ribbon-cutting ceremony on campus will take place in September, marking the completion of the Science Building. While there, attendees can view the progress of the Planetarium, the construction of which began this spring. Milla McConnell-Tuite of CSM's Institutional Advancement Office wants to remind the campus that contributors have until August 1 to have names inscribed on the "Wall of Stars" as part of the Reach for the Stars fundraising campaign for a new star projector and other equipment critical to the new planetarium. Please click here for information on how to donate and an update on the campaign.

John Sewart of CSM's Office of Research has posted an update on his Web site, which is accessible through the Research link at the left of this page. It's the latest CSM Research Brief entitled "DISTANCE EDUCATION AT CSM: Student Enrollment Patterns" (click here and scroll to the bottom of the page). Carolyn Fiori of CSM's Assistive Technology Center has brought up to date the DSPS Faculty Resource Guide, viewable at http://www.smccd.net/accounts/fiori/atcenter/handbooks/faculty_handbook/fac_index.htm. It also can be found in the Reference section accessible through the Resources link at the left of this page.

Classified staff, mark your calendars to attend an informal, fun gathering on July 13, starting around noon, at the amphitheater between campus buildings 2, 3 and 4. Please bring your own lunch, but cold beverages and musical entertainment will be provided. Socialize with other staff members, get away from the office for lunch and just enjoy. This is the first of other social events being coordinated by CSM's Classified Staff Planning Committee. On August 15, Opening Day at CSM, a hosted lunch, free raffle and kickoff to the new academic year is being planned--details are forthcoming. At that event, a schedule of staff activities during the year will be discussed, with ideas and comments welcomed. In the meantime, contact Joyce Berghoff at (650) 574-6220, Betty Fleming at (650) 524-6933 or Mike Habeeb at (650) 574-6442 for more information.

Other odds and ends worth noting are that the Kiosk and Main Cafeteria are re-opened as of June 19 for six weeks during the summer session, Mondays through Thursdays, 7 am to 2 pm. But Cafe International remains closed. All three are scheduled to be in operation and resume normal days and hours on August 16, the beginning of the fall semester...The "Employee of the Month" parking places for July belong to the following people: Joyce Berghoff (Lot 4) and.Cheryl Navarrete (Lot 5)...For students, staff, faculty and administrators, to access footage and review details on all campus projects, visit collegeofsanmateo.edu/construction and click on College of San Mateo and then LIVE CONSTRUCTION CAM & PHOTO GALLERY.
