But event evoked emotion as her tenure is ending
CSM President Shirley Kelly's Opening Day remarks upbeat
Wearing a Bulldog blue "Welcome to College of San Mateo" shirt,
Shirley Kelly, who will be retiring later this fall, presented her final Opening Day remarks as president of CSM last Tuesday.
Standing behind a podium, just below the center of the stage in the campus theatre, she looked out at the staff, faculty and administrators assembled for the community college's Opening Day presentation and smiled. Her relaxed appearance and upbeat demeanor created a "lighter" feel to an event that carried more than a tinge of farewell emotion, evidenced when those in attendance offered Kelly a rousing and appreciative standing ovation at the conclusion of her speech. Clearly touched by the gesture, but holding her emotions in check, the president pleasantly joked that she was saving her tears for the retirement parties.
Kelly's talk was relatively brief, about 15 minutes, and covered the following subjects:
--Introduction of new staff, faculty and administrators
--CSM President and Vice President of Student Services Hiring timelines
--Update on CSM's Facilities Master Plan
--Upcoming Science Building Ribbon Cutting Ceremony & Open House
--Fall initiatives such as student learning outcomes, accreditation, learning communities, writing across the curriculum and "Operation Welcome Mat."
The president ended her remarks by saying, "Since this will be my last opportunity to address you on opening day, I want to thank all of you for your wonderful support, advice, encouragement, friendship and excellent work over these last six years. It has truly been a privilege and pleasure to serve as President of this outstanding institution." To view the entirety of Kelly's remarks, click here.
Also speaking in the theatre on Opening Day were CSM Academic Senate President Jeremy Ball, AFT Representatives Ron Brown, Teeka James and Yaping Li, CSEA President Charles Jones and Assessment Coordinator Sandra Stefani Comerford.
*** CSM 11,000-pound planetarium dome lifted in to place
On Friday, August 4, the wind at College of San Mateo cooperated, allowing an 11,000-pound aluminum dome to be mounted on the community college’s new planetarium. A skilled team, including the operator of a 160-ton hydraulic crane, maneuvered the structure, 53 feet in diameter, into place in about 10 minutes.
“It fits,” joked Christine Tai of Swinerton, the company managing construction at the College.
The planetarium is part of a larger project, which includes CSM’s new 55,000 square foot Science Building now open for fall classes. The planetarium is expected to open in early 2007, according to Dan Crosby, project manager for McCarthy/LPA, the design/build team for the two science facilities. The planetarium’s roof is a geodesic dome, identifiable by its equilateral triangular segments. Although aluminum, the light green triangles appear soft, making the dome look like a big cushion. The strategically-placed “buttons” add to this illusion.
Earlier in the day, with the wind kicking it up, there was a possibility that the dome installation would have to be postponed. But between 1 and 2 pm, under a blue sky, workers got the “green light” and the huge crane revved its engines as a slight breeze blew.
“We will either have a dome lift or a flying saucer launch,” quipped John Wells, head of CSM’s Security, who watched the workers attach heavy-duty straps to the dome for lifting.
Fortunately, it was the former, though the raising of the dome had the feel of a space shuttle take-off.
Now with the dome in place, construction will proceed on the much-anticipated planetarium (the only one in San Mateo County), where CSM’s vibrant astronomy education and community events will continue.

By Jean Mach, CSM English Professor
As part of CSM's participation in the Carnegie Foundation's CASTL Campus Leadership Program and CSM's commitment to Writing Across the Curriculum, 30 faculty, administrators and students participated in an all-day ePortfolio workshop on our campus with presenters from Portland State University and LaGuardia Community College, two national leaders in ePortfolio programs that document students' learning over time and provide a basis for meaningful assessment of that process. The day included virtual tours of the systems at LaGuardia and Portland State and discussions of the various goals for an ePortfolio system, its use as an assessment tool and strategies for undertaking such a project at CSM. Our College's experience with Learning Communities, now expanded through the Writing Across the Curriculum initiative, can serve as a catalyst for college-wide discussions of furthering Integrative Learning on the campus. Jean Mach at mach@smccd.edu or (650) 574-6353 has packets of resource materials available for anyone who could not attend the workshop but would like to know more. This informative day was generously funded by the Lane Family Charitable Trust.

Accomplishments
CSM alum John Madden inducted into professional football's Hall of Fame
Notable CSM alum John Madden was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, August 5. Madden, who attended CSM and played for the Bulldogs in the 1950s and known widely today as a popular football commentator, was voted in for his success as a professional coach with the Oakland Raiders. In 1969 at the age of 32, he became one of the youngest head coaches in history when he was hired by the Raiders; in that same year he was named AFL Coach of the Year. With a career record of more than 100 wins and a regular season winning percentage of about 76 percent, he led the Raiders to a Super Bowl title during the 1976 football season. Madden follows Bill Walsh , another former CSM player from the 1950s and coach of three San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl victories, into the Hall of Fame.
CSM student received Herb Caen Scholarship
Alexis Terrazas, a CSM journalism major and sports editor of the San Matean , was named the 2006 college recipient of the Peninsula Press Club's Herb Caen Scholarship. Terrazas will receive $1,500 for continuing his studies at a four-year college or university. He was selected from among a pool that included community college and university students. Earlier this year, Terrazas also received the Bob Foster Memorial Scholarship for his work at CSM. Herb Caen was a legendary columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. Bob Foster was a television and radio columnist for the San Mateo Times for 40 years.
"It's always exciting to watch students such as Alexis excel, said CSM Journalism Adviser Ed Remitz. Even back in high school he demonstrated outstanding potential which has been evident in his work at The San Matean.
CSM Professor Emeritus Rudy Lapp wins "Award of Merit"
Rudolph Lapp, CSM emeritus professor of history, was honored at the Conference of California Historical Societies where he received the conference's Award of Merit for Scholarship/Authorship. The award honors his distinguished research and writing on the history of California, specifically on the topic of Blacks in the state. He is the author of the highly-regarded "Blacks in Gold Rush California", "Archie Lee: A Fugitive Slave Case in California" and "Afro-Americans in California." Lapp retired from full-time teaching at CSM in 1983 but continued to teach here in post-retirement into the 1990s.
Former student receives prestigious scholarship, will attend Oxford this fall
Daniel Zoughbie, a former CSM student and now graduate of UC Berkeley, was named a recipient of a Marshall Scholarship earlier in the year and will begin studies at the University of Oxford in England this fall. He was among the 43 selected of about 1,000 applicants in the United States to be endorsed for the award.
The scholarship covers costs, including those for university fees, living expenses, books, thesis grant, research and daily travel grants and fares to and from the United States.
The scholarship is named for General George C. Marshall, army chief of staff in World War II, U.S. President Harry Truman's secretary of state and the author of the Marshall Plan for European recovery.
Only available to U.S. citizens with a degree from a U.S. college or university and a 3.7 grade point average, the scholarship was founded by an Act of (Great Britain's) Parliament in 1953 and commemorates the humane ideals of the European Recovery Programme (Marshall Plan).
In the spring of 2005, Zoughbie was named recipient of a $10,000 Donald A. Strauss Public Service Scholarship. The Straus scholarships fund public service projects which students propose and implement in their senior year; Zoughbie's project was to establish diabetes “micro-clinics” in the West Bank. Daniel's father, Anton Zoughbie, teaches part-time for CSM in philosophy.
