1. Accomplishments

CSM athletics excels

CSM's baseball team ended the regular season as champions of the North Coast Conference with a 21-4 record (32-7-1 overall). The Bulldogs had the second best record in the state behind Fresno St. But over the weekend, the Bulldogs were eliminated in the first round of the Northern California playoffs, losing to Diablo Valley College in a best of three- game series.

CSM track star Sela Paini accomplished one for the CSM record books: she swept all four throwing competitions at the Coast Conference Track & Field Championships at CSM in April. She took home first place honors in the javelin, hammer, discus and shot put.

CSM students win statewide scholastic honorary awards
Three CSM students received awards for either service or academic achievement at the statewide Alpha Gamma Sigma conference in Ontario recently.  AGS is the state community college scholastic honorary, and has been at CSM since 1937.  The CSM AGS awardees are Roger Nishimoto, the chapter president; Ayumi Ode, chapter treasurer and international student from Japan; and Laura Van'T Hof, AGS representative to the InterClub Council. Nishimoto, in the photo with Ode, won the Ed Walsh Service Award. Ode and Van'T Hof received the Kathleen D. Loly Award for academic achievement.  Each of the awards, Walsh and Loly, has a monetary value, and these students were recognized at the conference's awards ceremony on April 21.  About 45 California community colleges were represented, and each college was limited to two Loly nominees and one Walsh; not all colleges used their quota.  This is the first time in a while that all CSM nominees received awards.  Last year, Marcela Cabrera received a Walsh award, and the year before that Celine Cheung received a Walsh and Raymond Kei received a “super” Loly.  CSM had altogether 11 students who went down to Ontario.  There were some 47 Loly nominees, and about 25 who received awards, while there were some 31 Walsh nominees, of which some 20 were award recipients.

CSM journalism student wins writing contest
Alexis Terrazas, editor of The San Matean
, captured first place honors in March at the annual gathering of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges in Sacramento. Terrazas, 19, was among more than 50 students who entered an opinion writing contest. The students had 75 minutes to write an opinion article based on a presentation about disaster planning. Terrazas, a journalism major, was awarded first place. “It’s intense and real-world,” said Ed Remitz, journalism adviser. “It shows how hard Alexis has worked to excel.”More than 50 community college journalism programs and 600-plus students and faculty attended the three-day event. Seven CSM Journalism students attended the conference, which includes workshops and contests. Terrazas already has won several scholarships and will be working during the summer at the San Francisco Examiner on a $1,500 internship from the California Newspaper Publishers Association. He was among only three community college recipients of this prestigious internship.

Loselea Naufahu, a former CSM student, graduated this month from Notre Dame de Mur University magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in sociology. She received the Outstanding Student Award for Service in Sociology. At the graduation ceremony, she will be the valedictorian. "All of us who taught Loselea will remember her enthusiasm and joy of living and her kindness and willingness to help others," wrote CSM Language Arts Instructor Muriel Brennan in a recent email communicating the CSM alumna's success. "She has maintained this exuberance at Notre Dame and has been a credit and will continue to be a credit to CSM.  Her plan is to pursue a graduate degree in law."

4. Recaps of CSM Events

A. CSM's Scholarship Awards Reception
attracted a sizable group in the campus' South Cafeteria on
May 3. It was a "feel good" event, as always. About $202,000 in individual scholarship awards were distributed to 168 CSM and 32 high school students. For the last 15 years, CSM's Scholarships & Special Services Nancy Pendergast (in forefront of photo on left) has co-coordinated or coordinated the event. She has received able assistance from many, including Phyllis Hechim of CSM's Vice President of Student Services' office (standing in photo at left). Hechim has participated in every one. Between Pendergast and Hechim are frequent reception contributors CSM Counselor Arnett Caviel and Language Arts Professor Pat Paoli, along with new CSM Vice President of Student Services Jennifer Hughes.

B.
More than 200 Polynesian high school students, parents and community members participated in the Pacific Islander High School Conference on May 4 at CSM.  The message provided by the speakers was inspirational and conveyed to the attendees the importance of staying in school, maintaining and appreciating one's culture, recognizing the importance of family and community and the importance of attending a college like CSM. --Reported by Henry Villareal, CSM's dean of enroment services and chair of the Diversity in Action Group.

C. CSM's Associated Students held its annual Spring Fling from May 1-4. This year, the organizers requested that CSM President Mike Claire be a dunk tank participant. Being a good sport, Claire acquiesced. CSM Social Science Professor David Danielson, displaying good pitching form, fired what looked like a fastball with movement at the dunk tank trigger. It hit the target. The seat Claire was sitting on collapsed. And the president fell into what was very cold water. The question now is this: "Is Danielson in some hot water?" We'll let Danielson, who teaches philosophy, ponder that profound question for a while with his students and colleagues.
