Hmm… what class
should I take?

 ¡Ay!… ¿qué clase
debo tomar?

If you want to take only Spanish courses for personal benefit, you can ask to be a non-matriculated student. To learn about this choice, visit the explanation on our Foreign Language page. Not matriculating means you can avoid various processes which help students who want to earn degrees and/or transfer but which are not necessarily useful for those who just want to take a few courses.

Overview

CSM offers a full range of courses in Spanish, including the following:

Transfer--classroom offerings: 110 (also offered as111 and 112), 120, 131, 132, 140, 251(Hispanoamérica Contemporánea).These are first- and second-year and advanced college Spanish courses.

Transfer--telecourse offerings: 115, 116, 117, 118. The sequence is equivalent to the first year of college Spanish but without the speaking component; course material is broadcast on KCSM-TV and there are only three on-campus meetings.

Non-transfer offerings: 801,802,803,804,805,806. These courses, which count as humanities electives, focus primarily on speaking and listening and are ordinarily offered in the evening only.

For detailed explanation of what the course numbers mean, please refer to our CSM Foreign Languages page.

Some courses are offered only one semester annually. For information about planned offerings in a later semester, call the Language Arts Division Office at (650) 574-6314.

Our classroom courses feature in-class speaking and listening, and we're continually increasing the supplementary materials for speaking and listening outside of class, including audio, video, and computerized materials. We also have a Foreign Language Center to help you with your studies.

What's special

In the summer we often offer a semester in a Spanish-speaking country.

Another way to practice Spanish and make new friends is by contacting the multicultural EOPS office and the English as a Second Language program to get in touch with native and near-native speakers of Spanish who are also students at CSM.
