English as as Second Language

COURSES

The English as a Second Language Department offers a core curriculum of high-beginning to advanced level courses in conversation, reading and writing for non-native speakers of English. The ESL faculty encourages students to take ESL courses in all skill levels – conversation, reading and writing – and progress through the sequence one level at a time to become proficient in English. If a student starts at the first level and takes ESL courses each semester at CSM, following the course sequence, that student will complete the ESL sequence in 3 years or more. Click on the link at the bottom of this page to see the courses available for non-native speakers of English.

In addition to the core courses offered in conversation, reading and writing, the ESL Department offers supplemental courses focused on specific skill areas. A more detailed description of these courses can be found if you click on the link at the bottom of this page. These supplemental courses include:

  • Grammar Review,
  • Accent Reduction,
  • Phonics, and
  • Spelling.

For one-on-one assistance, the ESL Department also offers lab-only courses in conversation, reading and writing. These courses can be taken for .5-2 units a semester and are designed to allow students to work at their own pace in the labs. Students work individually and with an instructor one-on-one on various assignments. In the Reading and ESL Center, students may choose from lab-only courses to improve skills in speaking, listening, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and/or spelling. In the Writing Center, students may take ESL 850/Writing Workshop to improve their writing and grammar skills.
