Creating Links on Your Web Pages

Linking email addresses, web resources and handouts on your web page, will greatly increase the utility of your page. Word documents and Acrobat PDF files can downloaded with just a mouse click. Also, other sites can be linked to your web page greatly improving your students access to course materials and educational resources on the web. NASA, PBS and many other organizations have created resources for you to use!

 

Linking to an Email Address

A link can be made to an email address. When the user clicks on the link, the email program window will open if

  • if the user has an email program installed on the computer
  • If the email program is configured to send email

 

Create the text that will be the email link

  1. Type the text that will refer to the page (e.g. einstein@mit.edu )
  2. Select the text.
  3. Using the Link Editor (Properties) enter the email name with "mailto:"
    (mailto:einstein@smccd.edu)

Select from left frame, "email"

  • Email
  • Existing File or Webpage
  • Section Inside a webpage


1. In FrontPage 2003, select the text to which you want to create the hyperlink, and then click Hyperlink on the Insert menu.
2. In the Insert Hyperlink dialog box, click to select the page that you want to link to.

The page name appears in the Address box.
3. Click Target Frame, select an item in the Common targets box, or click one of the rectangles in the graphic, and then click OK.
4. Click OK to close the Insert Hyperlink dialog box.

 

Follow the instructions on the Upload Page to upload your webpage

 

Creating Links to Other Pages

A link can be made to another page

  • if that page already exists
  • if that page has a properly named file name

The link will work if "previewed" in your web editing program.

The link will work on the Internet only if both pages are uploaded to your web site.

 

Create the text that will contain the link

  1. Type the text that will refer to the page (e.g. Astrology 101)
  2. Select the text.
  3. Using the Link Editor (Properties), browse to find the file on your desktop or enter the file name (e.g. Astrology 101)
  4. If using HomePage, hit "return" to set the link.

Browse (click on the folder) to locate the file.

Creating Links to Paragraphs within a Page

"Anchors" are used to take the user to a section within a page - it could be the same page or a section within a different page.

Example: Click "Bottom" and you will advance to the bottom of this page.

"Bottom" is a link.   The anchor anchor imageis a hidden page element located at the bottom of the page.

1.  Create the anchor

  1. Place your cursor in that location that you want the user to go to.
  2. From Application Menu : Insert > Invisible Elements > Named Anchor
  3. In the dialog box enter a name for the location. (no spaces, hypens, quotes or other "special characters")
  4. Click OK An anchor will appear in the location.

Tip: Place the achor above the location.

Save your document.

 

2. Create the link to the achor

  1. Type the text that will refer to the anchor location (e.g. "bottom")
  2. Select the text.
  3. Using the Link Editor (Properties), enter the link (e.g. #linkname)
  4. If using HomePage, hit "return" to set the link.

Link to an anchor in another page

Links to sections within other pages can also be made.

  1. Enter the file name of the page
  2. Append the anchor link name (e.g. filename.html#bottom)
