Over 1000 girls
attend conference annually. The majority of girls came from San Mateo
County, however, girls came from as far away as Fairfield, Gilroy, San
Rafael, and Contra Costa. The girls definitely have fun and feel that
they learn. Some comments the girls have given us are:
- "I love EYH."
- "The workshops were very helpful
towards my career decision."
- "EYH should always be available
to young women so they can be aware of career options in science
and math.
- "I learned a lot of new things and
lots about careers."
- "I love this and I will be coming
back next year."
- "EYH is very Cool."
- "Now I know I can be anything."

Small group sessions allow time for
one-on-one guidance.

Many Facets of the community come together to make Expanding Your Horizons
possible. The workshops are led by women working in math- and science-related
fields. Over 40 different hands-on workshops are held in a variety of
areas. In 2008, 139 women are representing many disciplines and 80 companies
volunteered their time and expertise to present workshops. The presenters
come from diverse careers in private industry, government, and education.
Workshops are offered in medicine and allied health, math, and computer
science, biotechnology, life sciences, physical sciences, animal sciences,
science writing, law, and college planning.
What last year's participants said:
-
"Lots of fun activities"
- "I loved the classes"
- "This was great"
- "We got to look through
microscopes"
- "We made slime and got
to keep samples"
Many alumnae of earlier Expanding Your Horizons conferences have now
completed their education and are bringing their daughters or are returning
to present workshops for the girls.
Adult Program
Workshop presenters make special effort to provide exciting and informative
presentations for the students. Adults may not attend the student sessions.
A parallel program for adults is offered. Adults are enthusiastic about
the conference and find if helpful both for themselves and for the girls.
One parent wrote "Good for girls to be in all-girl special activity
with lots of good role models." One parent said "This was a
wonderful opportunity for me and my daughter and interested her in fields
she was not aware of, particularly since neither or us [parents] have
been interested in science." And another parent said "EYH was
very good for my daughter, I wish there was a program like this when I
was young." the program for adults includes science and math content
areas as well as sessions on college planning and financing, and career
planning.
