College for Kids
is a three week academic enrichment program offered through the
Community Education division of the San Mateo County Community
College District for youngsters entering the 5th through the 9th
grades. The summer program is held on the three campuses of
Caņada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College and
serves over 400 children.
The program combines the fun of
summer camp with the educational benefits of a college setting.
Its focus is to promote student success by providing students
with the opportunity to explore new areas of interest and to
review concepts learned during the school year. It enhances
basic skills and encourages the developing of new skills and
abilities. At the end of the three week program, students are
better prepared for the upcoming school year.
College for Kids provides a
positive introductory college experience for the students. It
aims to plant a seed of going to college in the minds of
children whose families have not traditionally been exposed to
higher education. The aim is to inspire these children to
consider higher education as a goal and the possibility of going
to college as a reality for them. With the opportunity to be
better educated and trained, this generation would be able to
contribute to the economic growth of the bay area and become
responsible members of its communities. Toward this goal, the
program seeks grants to provide scholarships to children from
low-income families. The funds would give the disadvantaged
children an opportunity to participate in on-campus class on
computers, art, math, science, language arts and other topics of
academic merit and interest to them.
The registration fee for the three
week College for Kids program is currently $360 per student. Qualification for scholarships is determined using financial
guidelines set by the state for income eligibility for low
income services.
The geographical area served by
College for Kids incorporates the Greater Bay Area with the
majority of the youngsters coming from San Mateo County. The
target population is any child entering the fifth through ninth
grades. The program is being promoted through its website,
flyers distributed to every classroom in the school districts in
San Mateo County, announcements in community papers and
community TV stations, campus papers, postings and events.
