The best gift you can give is the gift of opportunity
—a way to make the best of one's talents.
A scholarship can often make the difference between
a student continuing in college or not.
A scholarship, literally, can change a student's life.

Miriam Torres
Scholarship Recipient

This Cañada College student, from a low income family headed by a single mother, is intimately familiar with financial struggle. Only after she received a scholarship, did life become a little easier.

"I found that having a scholarship helped me academically and personally...Receiving these scholarships made me realize that I can have a dream and that anything is possible."

The Foundation awards scholarships annually on a competitive basis to students at the District's three colleges. Recipients may be entering from high school, continuing their studies at one of the District's colleges or transferring to a four-year institution. Awards range from $200 to $2,000.

The Scholarship Committee at each of the colleges chooses scholarship recipients. Each college holds an annual event in May to recognize the scholarship recipients and honor the donors. Payments are made to student recipients upon verification of enrollment at one of the three District colleges or at a transfer institution.

Endowed Scholarships
The principal amounts of this scholarship are never touched. The funds are invested through a professional money management firm. Scholarships are paid out of the interest earned on the principal. This is the scholarship plan that assures your gift will continue well into the future. The minimum amount to establish an SMCCCF endowed scholarship is $20,000. Endowed accounts are charged a 2% annual management fee.

Jim Wagner
Scholarship Donor
"Anthropology fascinates me as I am sure it would have fascinated my mother, Frances Wagner. My sisters, Mary Tigert and Marjorie Nagel, and I felt it appropriate and an honor to endow a scholarship in her name. As a long time student at Skyline College myself, it only seemed fitting that the scholarship be available to Skyline anthropology students."

Non-Endowed Scholarships

There is no minimum to establish a non-endowed scholarship, but one with a title containing an individual or organization name requires an initial deposit of $500. The exception to this is the memorial scholarship that can be established at any amount. Any interest earned on a non-endowed scholarship is transferred to the General Fund of the Foundation.

Allen Mueller
Scholarship Donor
“When I established the Lois Mueller Memorial Fund, I had no idea of the profound effect the scholarships would have on the recipients,” said Allen, “If more people were aware of the enormous gratification they receive from knowing they have touched a young person’s life so deeply, they would establish a scholarship program themselves.”

Below are established scholarships to which you may wish to contribute

A scholarship means as much to a student emotionally as it does financially. The knowledge that someone cares has as much impact on a student as a sum of money. Many of the students at Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College are the first in their family to attend college, and after college they will continue to live and work in our area. For many high school seniors, the difference between going to college or remaining in a low-paying job depends solely on the availability of financial assistance like scholarships. Those scholarships are made available for entering high school students and students continuing their education at Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College.
"Cañada Cares" Scholarship Fund—The purpose of the "Cañada Cares" Scholarship fund is to provide scholarships for local, low-income students to attend Cañada College for one year. "Cañada Cares" gives scholarships to continuing Cañada College students as well as entering high school graduates.
"Friends of Skyline" Scholarship Fund—The purpose of the "Friends of Skyline" Scholarship fund is to provide scholarships for local, low-income students with academic merit to attend Skyline College for one year. "Friends of Skyline" gives scholarships to continuing Skyline College students as well as entering high school graduates.

"Friends of CSM" Scholarship Fund—The purpose of the "Friends of CSM" Scholarship fund is to provide scholarships for local, low-income students with academic merit to attend College of San Mateo for one year. "Friends of CSM" gives scholarships to continuing CSM students as well as entering high school graduates.
