ANNOUNCEMENTS   (top)

June, 2004

The Global Studies Program is pleased to announce the launch of its new website. The website has been created to give you an overview of the Global Studies Program and its various components. It includes a list of course offerings, descriptions for the Certificate Program and Transfer Option, as well as course descriptions and lesson plans for its four offerings: The Middle East, Latin America, Europe and the Pacific Rim. Lastly, it includes faculty biographies and information on how to contact them.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN  (top)

Welcome to the College of San Mateo’s Global Studies Program website.  This website has been created to give you an overview of the Global Studies Program and its various components.  I hope you find it useful.

The Global Studies Program was created in 2000 to give students an understanding of the many, truly global issues which affect us all.   It also offers a comprehensive awareness of multicultural and multidimensional issues as they relate to global competitiveness.  It is a unique program in every sense of the word and College of San Mateo is one of the few community colleges to have an offering such as this.

The Global Studies Program offers emphasis in the following areas:  Latin America, the Middle East, Europe and the Pacific Rim;  Africa will be added in 2005.  The Program has two options:  Students can obtain a Certificate or use the units as a concentration for transferring to a four year institution (the Transfer Option).

The Global Studies Program is solid preparation for a variety of majors:  Political Science, International Relations, Journalism, Economics and International Business, to name a few.  This interdisciplinary program provides students with a strong background for working in a global economy, living in a multicultural society and making intelligent decisions as global citizens.  Students develop knowledge and understanding of critical issues affecting their lives and communities as well as other countries and cultures.  Students have an opportunity to analyze and apply concepts and techniques of effective intercultural communication.  They will develop respect for different kinds of views held by people around the world.

The Global Studies Program may constitute continuing and/or supplementary academic work that enhances and broadens a chosen major or career.  Global literacy and competence allow students flexibility in deciding among expanding career opportunities in the global community.  Businesses now search the entire world for customers, suppliers, labor and partners in such a way that globalization has placed many demands on these businesses and their employees.  Many opportunities exist for students with international business knowledge.  International firms or domestic firms with international divisions can employ program graduates. Global education offers many employment opportunities as well as positions in international banking, sales and international trade.  Other areas of opportunity include international law, human rights and public policy.  Government and non-profit organizations offer a wide range of opportunities as well.  The international field is wide open and ever changing.

The Global Studies Program offers unique opportunities whether taken for a Certificate or as a part of a transfer option.  If you are interested in exploring the world around you and learning about the complexity of global issues, I hope you enroll.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call Professor Martin Morales, Program Director, at (650) 574-6379 or me at (650) 574-6496.
