Hello, my name is Kindell. I am a first year respiratory student. I enjoy learning about the body and helping people. For this reason I have sought career choices that would enable me to do this. At first I thought I wanted to be a P.E. major. I love sports; particularly soccer, biking and ocean sports. Teaching P.E. and coaching would be an ideal job for me. Yet I don't feel like it would satisfy a personal goal of assisting others and making a difference in their lives like a job in the medical field would. A P.E. major doesn't offer an indepth description of the human body either. For this reason my focus shifted over to Physical Therapy which although could be tedious and monotonous work, would satisfy my desire to be knowledgeable about the body and utilize my skills. This major is very tough, lengthy, expensive and impacted.
Recently I took an EMT course for a second option (other than waitressing) for a college career. While I did an internship in the Emergency Room for this class, I was exposed to, for the first time, a Respiratory Therapist. I didn't give it too much thought until my mom was hospitalized for back surgery and needed one in a post operative acute setting. I started asking questions about the job - it's versatility, the pay, the need for one, how to become one - and was pleased with the answers. Two years in an intensive program and I can come out with the sort of knowledge I want, good pay, ability to travel and finally have some cash while saving and enriching peoples lives. It would be very rewarding for me to work with newborns, pediatrics or Emergency patients.
