Getting Started

First Assignment due Monday, 8/27/2012
Updated 8/24/2012
If you have not started yet, you still have time to complete the entire first assignment that is due by 11 pm on Monday, 8/27. The first assignment is:
1. Sign up for MyMathLab and score 100% on the syllabus quiz
2. Submit quiz #1
3. Submit discussion #1 by 11 pm. You can add yourself to our WebAccess class by using the enrollment key "stats".

To find out more details, watch the "Introduction to the course and MyMathLab" from within MyMathLab in the "Getting Started" section. All of the information you need to get started can be found below.

All students must complete this assignment to be a part of this class. If you have completed the first assignment already, great job! Homework #1 which is both chapters 1 & 2 is due on Thursday, 8/30. For a list of due dates, click the link for the course calendar on the left side of this page.

Class Information & Supply List
Updated 8/9/2012
Our recommended in-person orientation will be on Wednesday, August 22 from 5:05 to 5:55 pm in 17-105. This is your only opportunity to meet fellow classmates, meet tutor(s), and get your questions about the course answered in person, so please plan to attend. Students who wish to add the class should attend the orientation. I will give priority to those students in adding the class.

For those of you who want to get a head start on your shopping, I've listed the required supplies below. Please purchase a MyMathLab access code before the first day of class so that you can be ready to go on the first day or even start early. We will have multiple assignments due each week and the midterm will be here before you know it! (You really, really want to start early.)

  1. Access code for MyMathLab available from the Cañada College Bookstore or online at MyMathLab. All work will be done and submitted online via MyMathLab. The entire textbook is available online within MyMathLab. Each student must have his/her own MyMathLab account. For those of you who want a hard copy of the text, you may buy or rent one from the bookstore.

***The course ID and information about how to get started with MyMathLab can be found in this handout

  2. A TI-83 or TI-84 (not TI-89) graphing calculator. These are available for rent and sale in the bookstore. Statistics requires extensive use of the built-in functionalities of these calculators.
  3. Spiral bound notebook so that you can work out examples and homework problems.
  4. Regular access to a digital camera or scanner so that you can scan or photograph your written assignments that you will submit online electronically. Most camera phones should work, too, so long as I can read what you have written.
  5. Reliable computer and internet connection so that you can do work for this online class.
Important dates -- These are the dates that you will need to come to campus
  • August 22 (5:05-5:55 pm): Mandatory Orientation in Building 17, Room 105
  • September 19 & 20: In person midterm exam 1(See syllabus -- you only need to come to campus on one of these two days)
  • November 14 & 15: In person midterm exam 2(See syllabus -- you only need to come to campus on one of these two days)
  • December 12 & 13: In person final exam (See syllabus -- you only need to come to campus on one of these two days) In addition, online homework, discussions, and quizzes will be due every Monday and Thursday (unless otherwise noted) by 11:00 pm. (See course calendar for more details.)
To give you an idea of the pace of the class, you can download the course calendar above. Realistically, you can expect to spend at least 1.5 -3 hours per day (10 - 21 hours per week!) on the class. Start assignments early and manage your time wisely. Please read the Frequently Asked Questions page and check back before our orientation for updates! I look forward to meeting you soon.
