Announcements

Please check your my.smccd.edu email accounts regularly (or forward your emails to an account that you check). I will be sending emails to enrolled students over the next couple of weeks with more course details.

Getting Started
Updated 6/16/2010
All homework and quizzes will be completed in MyMathLab at http://www.coursecompass.com. You can purchase access either in the bookstore, or if you have a credit card, you can sign up online. You will need the information on the sheets below to get signed into the appropriate course. The Course IDs are in the files linked below. Make sure you pick the right one!

Each person must have his or her own account. In addition to enrolling in the course via WebSMART, you must also enroll in the appropriate MyMathLab course.

Class Information & Supply List
Updated 6/8/2010
Our mandatory orientation for Math 111 & 112 will be on Monday, June 21 from 4:10 to 5:00 pm, and the mandatory orientation for Math 110 will be on Monday, June 21 from 5:05 to 5:55 pm. Your orientation attendance will be counted as a homework assignment. This is one of the few opportunities for you to get your questions about the course answered in person, so please plan to attend. Students who wish to add the class should attend the orientation. I will give priority to those students in adding the class.

For those of you who want to get a head start on your shopping, I've listed the required supplies below. Please purchase a MyMathLab access code by the first day of class. The first homework assignment and quiz are due Thursday, 6/24. I will send out an email by the middle of next week so you can get a jump start on the course work.

  1. Access code for MyMathLab available from the Cañada College Bookstore or online at Course Compass. All work will be done and submitted online via MyMathLab. The entire textbook is available online within MyMathLab. For those of you who want a hard copy of the text, you may buy or rent one from the bookstore.

For those of you who wish to buy a MyMathLab access code before 6/16, please buy it from the bookstore. To buy online from Course Compass, you need a separate course ID that I have not finished setting up yet.

Students who were previously enrolled in Math 110, 111, or 112 at Cañada in Summer 2009, Fall 2009, or Spring 2010 and used MyMathLab do not need to purchase access. (Students from Math 811 who used MyMathLab will need to purchase a new access code.)
  2. A TI-83 or TI-84 (not TI-89) graphing calculator. These are available for rent and sale in the bookstore. You will also be using this calculator in Math 120 and 200.
  3. Spiral bound notebook so that you can work out examples and homework problems.
Important dates -- These are the dates that you will need to come to campus
  • June 21 (4:10-5:00 pm): Mandatory Orientation for Math 111 & 112 in Building 3, Room 142
  • June 21 (5:05-5:55 pm): Mandatory Orientation for Math 110 in Building 3, Room 142

In addition, online homework and online quizzes will be due every Monday and Thursday by 11:00 pm. Our first assignment and quiz will be due June 24.
To give you an idea of the pace of the class, you can download the course calendars below. Basically, Math 110 will be completing a chapter every 3-4 days. Math 111 & 112 will each be completing about half a chapter every three to four days. This is a very fast paced class! Make sure that you schedule enough time to study, learn the material, and complete the assignments. Math 110 students can expect to spend at least 4-6 hours per day on the class, and Math 111 & 112 students can expect to spend at least 3-5 hours per day on the class. Please check back before our orientation for updates! I look forward to meeting you soon.
