Short Assignment #1
Goals:
1)
Students will make a document with which they can study the
organization of life.
2)
Students will make a document with which they will learn the specific characteristics
of the major Phyla (divisions) of life.
3)
Students will learn how to download a file form the web.
4)
Students will learn how to make a bulleted list.
5)
Students will learn how to add a bookmark to an electronic document.
6)
Students will learn how to make an external link in a document.
7)
Students will learn how to send an attached document through email.
Instruction.
1)
Students can use the online document http://www.smccd.net/accounts/kapp/215/3dom.rtf
.
To study the structure of the Domains and Phyla of life. You will be required to be able to recognize
these names and the characteristics of the various domains, Kingdoms and
Phyla. Use this document to test and
quiz yourself.
2)
You the students will be providing the majority of this web site. I will be taking your information, checking
it for errors and loading it onto the web site. In order to make this easier for me you must follow the following
format and procedures.

Students will learn how to download a file form the web.

You
will get a box asking for a code. Just
click on the Cancel button. Your
computer should automatically download the list. |

Scroll
down the list and find your name and your assignment. If your name is under a Phyla like Mei
chan then you will be getting information of that Phyla. If your name is under the kingdom then you
will be finding information on that kingdom.
I would like individuals who are working in the same kingdom to submit
their materials all in on one document.
This will reduce the formatting time that I will have. |

Students will learn how to make a bulleted list.
|

The
above is a part of the table that you will be working on. Joshua will be providing the information
of what constitutes the Kingdom Eugleonzoa.
Marina and terry will be providing the required information within the
rows. |

information is going to be bulleted.
Make the information short. So
that It will fit in the box. You may
shrink the font ant that may help. |

To
make a bulleted, move your cursor in your document to the area where you wish
to enter the bullets. Click on that
area to place your cursor their, then click on the bullet icon
|

separate thoughts · You just need to click on
return and you get another bullet · We don’t have a lot of
space so make your statements short · Cell wall is cellulose · Homogametic · Has single large
mitochondrion · Marine & aqueous |

Students will learn how to add a bookmark to an electronic document.

A
bookmark is just an internal note to your computer of a special item that you
request. If you place a bookmark in
your document, this allows you to move from one part of the document to
another rapidly using an internal link (we will do this later) |

Insert
a bookmark next to the kingdom or phyla that you are researching. |
First
move your cursor and click to place your cursor where you want the
bookmark. You will be placing your
bookmark between the first and second letter of your kingdom or phyla. |
|
Next move your cursor to the work toolbar and click on insert. |
|
|
|
A
screen will pop up that contains your choices to insert. In this particular instance you will be
choosing bookmark |
|
Put
the name of your kingdom or phyla where it says bookmarkname. Some simple rules for bookmarks. They cannot have spaces, they do not begin
with numbers and they don’t have any weird symbols in them. I
want you to use the phyla or the kingdom or domain names that you were
assigned. When
you are finished click on the add button and your bookmark will be placed. |

Students will learn how to make an external link in a document.
|
As
part of your assignment you are asked to find an external link to a web page
that has a picture (and better yet a description) of the specific example that
you gave for the information. In
order to do this you will be required to perform a search of the web, to copy
the url then to make a link with that URL. |

|
On
the left is a picture of part of the screen form the Netscape navigator browser
program. This is a site about the red
"algae" the url is located in the Location: bar. To copy the URL move your cursor over the
url then click on Ctrl C (the Ctrl
and the C key at the same time. This
saves a copy of this URL. You can do
the same thing by clicking on the copy key on your tool bar. |

Once
you have a copy of the URL. Highlight
the text that you want to make a link with.
Next move your cursor to the work toolbar and click on insert. |
|

A
screen will pop up that contains your choices to insert. In this particular instance you will be
choosing Hyperlink. |

Since
I highlighted red algae for my link red algae is in the text to display
area. You will want to make sure that
you click on the existing file or Web Page Icon. You can then move the cursor into the "Type the file or
Web page name:" box and pres "Ctrl V" keys at the same time to enter your link. Click on the OK button (not shown here)
and you will have made a link to an external document. If you have made your link the color of
the word you highlighted should change to blue and it should also be underlined. Like red algae |
