The Skyline College Karate Club was first organized by Eric Larson in 1992 as a service to the students, faculty and staff of Skyline College. The club's purpose is to promote and practice the art of Shotokan Karate-Do as a means of enhancing and enriching its member's educational experience. Over the years interest in the Karate Club grew, and in 1998 Shotokan Karate began to be offered as a credit class, COMB 404/405, within the Physical Education department. The Karate Club essentially became COMB 404/405, but the club itself did not cease to exist. Currently, the Club serves as an enhancement to the activities of the P.E. course, COMB 404/405. Membership in the Karate Club allows the student to test for promotion in rank, participate in tournament competitions, and a variety of extra-curricular activities, such as our end-of-semester parties at local Japanese restaurants. Membership in the Karate Club is open to any student currently enrolled in either COMB 404 or COMB 405. There is no additional expense to join the Club. Testing and promotions are held at the end of each semester. A modest fee of $5 is charged for each promotion in rank. The money goes to purchase the student's new belt, and any extra funds are put into the club's account for the purchase of club training equipment.  Beginners are welcome, and students with experience in other styles of martial arts are also encouraged to join. Although we train hard and take our training seriously, we also have fun. The Skyline College Karate Club is a good way to keep fit, learn some practical skills, meet new friends, and relieve the stress of school and work.
