CATALOG DESCRIPTION
This
course will introduce the student to the skills and techniques of the Japanese
art of Shotokan Karate. Emphasis will be placed on physical conditioning,
basic strikes and blocks, forms (kata), sparring techniques, self-discipline
and self-development. Transfer credit: UC; CSU (E2).

and Wednesdays: 1:40 to 3:00 p.m.

OBJECTIVES
In this course you will learn to:
- Perform
the kicks, punches, strikes, blocks, and stances of Shotokan Karate.
- Perform
the beginning series of Shotokan Karate katas (single-person forms).
- Perform
effective self-defense techniques.
- Understand
and demonstrate proper etiquette and respect for others in training.
- Develop
a greater sense of self-discipline, self-respect, and self-knowledge.
- Develop
an understanding of the various cultures associated with the development
of karate.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon successful
completion of this course students will be able to:
Demonstrate the appropriate skills, knowledge, concepts
and vocabulary used in the practice of Shotokan Karate to perform and
progress at a beginning/intermediate or advanced level in this art.
REQUIRED
MATERIALS:
Workout clothing or karate gi.
Please read the Introductory Information section of this website to
familiarize yourself with class procedures.
GRADING:
Letter Grade (A - F); or Pass/No Pass (you must request
this option)
ATTENDANCE:
NOTE: Regular attendance is very important to success in
this class. Students who accumulate more than six absences may be dropped
from the course.
No credit will be given for
non-participation (sitting and watching). If you are too ill or injured to
practice, please rest and take care of yourself until you are ready to return.

IMPORTANT
INFORMATION:
· In coordination
with the DSPS office, reasonable accommodations will be provided to eligible

· Students
must report injuries that occur in class immediately to the instructor.
· In
teaching activity courses it may be necessary for students to have physical
contact with the instructor or other students. If you have problems
with such contact notify the instructor so you can determine if this class is

REQUIREMENTS
FOR CREDIT:
Your grade will be based upon the following:
- Attendance
and participation in class. Attendance is an important part of your
grade. A Sign-in sheet will be available at the beginning of every
class. Please initial for the appropriate date of attendance.
- Completion
of a written essay on some aspect of karate-do. (Topics will be
discussed in class.).
- Demonstration
of proper etiquette, attitude and respect for others during training.
- Demonstration
of competence in skills and techniques specific to your level of
training.

ATTIRE
AND APPEARANCE:
· Jewelry,
rings, watches and hats should be removed prior to any training.
· Students
are encouraged, but not required, to purchase a karate uniform (gi). Uniforms may be special ordered through the Skyline
Bookstore, or purchased elsewhere (see instructor for recommendations.)
· If
students elect not to wear a gi, they may wear
loose fitting sweat pants and sweat shirts.
· Shoes
and socks must be removed.
· Fingernails
and toenails must be kept trimmed and hair should be kept back.
· Uniforms
and clothing must always be kept clean.
TARDY
POLICY:
Please make every effort to come to class on time.
Arriving late disrupts the class. If you arrive late, follow the procedures
listed in the Introduction Sheet in your Course Packet. Students who are
tardy will receive only half-credit for attendance.
