kristina oda:
hi guys
[Message #2]
Lopez Gilberto:
good morning
[Message #3]
Lopez Gilberto:
the texts that i looked at were magazines like Maxim, FHM, Cosmo etc.
[Message #4]
kristina oda:
me too
[Message #5]
Lopez Gilberto:
same as last semester huh?
[Message #6]
kristina oda:
but then again i looked at these magazines because i can talk about the gender
roles
[Message #7]
kristina oda:
yeh
[Message #8]
Erica Ruiz:
I did the gender role. I did it on the television program "Sex and the City".
[Message #9]
kristina oda:
umm.. so we write aboutbeauty and the beast right?
[Message #10]
kristina oda:
no about these magazines?
[Message #11]
kristina oda:
ooppss not*
[Message #12]
Lopez Gilberto:
well, we are all aware that the gender stereo types have changed a lot in just a
couple of years
[Message #13]
Lopez Gilberto:
well we are going to discuss everything
[Message #14]
Lopez Gilberto:
they have changed for both sexes
[Message #15]
Lopez Gilberto:
unlike before, now people are being shown examples of new stereo types
[Message #16]
Erica Ruiz:
I chose "Sex and the City" because the women in this show are very independent
and successful. They are able to talk to their partners and everyone else what
it is that they want in a relationship and everything else in life. I believe
this is what a lot of women are started to do because the traditional roles of
women are drastically evolving.
[Message #17]
kristina oda:
i know i love that show
[Message #18]
Lopez Gilberto:
this is also a big change for males too
[Message #19]
Lopez Gilberto:
as we accept all these new lifestyles
[Message #20]
Erica Ruiz:
yeah, i agree with you. men are being more acceptable of the change in women's
roles.
[Message #21]
Lopez Gilberto:
we are more likely to attend to the womens needs (our partners)
[Message #22]
Erica Ruiz:
even though, i think that men and women in the southern part of the country are
not as tolerant to the changing roles.
[Message #23]
kristina oda:
yes there is.. i think that society has made a change and people see it as they
need to be more independent to be accepted into society which i think is stupid
because people have to be a certain way for people to really accept them and it
shouldnt be that way
[Message #24]
Amy Lawlor:
good--so how do these changes compare to the Beauty and the Beast?
[Message #25]
Lopez Gilberto:
back in those days all the males were the ones that made all the rules and
stereo types for the female gender
[Message #26]
Lopez Gilberto:
and they had to live up to them in order to be accepted, normal just like the
rest of the women
[Message #27]
kristina oda:
these changes compare to beauty and the beast because the story has changed so
much from like the c.e.150. to now. it more like the male was suppose to be the
leader and the women was suppose to be defenseless and just stay at home while
the man was suppose to do everything.
[Message #28]
Erica Ruiz:
these changes compare to Beauty and the Beast because modern women are not being
submissive and are fighting for their rights and not letting "society" tell them
how they should be, act, and do with their lives.
[Message #29]
kristina oda:
that is very true
[Message #30]
Erica Ruiz:
we have evolved since the time that Beauty and the Beast was written. women were
not able to vote, were not accepted as dominate figures in society (couldn't
work), etc. women have broken various obstacles in order to get where we are
now. many women, like myself, take these things for granted. if it were not for
the brave women that fought for our rights, we would probably be in the same
position that Beauty was.
[Message #31]
kristina oda:
once i think about it that may be true but then again i think that us women
would have done something about it to make it different. like instead of someone
standing up and saying something or doing something about it somebody else would
of so either way its the same thing.
[Message #32]
Erica Ruiz:
i guess you are right. i don't think things would have stayed that way for so
long without someone doing something about it.
[Message #33]
Lopez Gilberto:
females dont have to fight for their rights as much as before
[Message #34]
Lopez Gilberto:
you dont really see any issues like that on the news anymore
[Message #35]
kristina oda:
yes but there are still stereo types that people think as for example if you see
a women working construction, people are going to think what is she doing or a
women is not capable for the job..you know what i mean?
[Message #36]
Erica Ruiz:
i guess. but there are some issues like men being paid more for doing the same
job that a female would.
[Message #37]
Lopez Gilberto:
both of you are right
[Message #38]
Lopez Gilberto:
one of the biggest issues that i am aware of, is females trying to be
firefighters
[Message #39]
Lopez Gilberto:
many female activist insist on lighter physical test for women
[Message #40]
Erica Ruiz:
yeah, i guess it was really great when SF Mayor Newson appointed a female to be
head of the fire department.
[Message #41]
Lopez Gilberto:
but the reality is that if both males and females cant carry a latter then they
are not stong enough for the job
[Message #42]
kristina oda:
yeh but then again i know that those strong women can handle it its just the
fact that of course a man would be alittle stronger than a female..
[Message #43]
Lopez Gilberto:
and trust me their are lots of females that are firefighters and have completed
the physical test just like any other male
[Message #44]
Erica Ruiz:
i don't think it would be fair for the males to have the females do the lighter
test or job. it should be fair for everyone.
[Message #45]
Lopez Gilberto:
i agree
[Message #46]
kristina oda:
yes if the women are applying for the job they should know what they are getting
themselves into.
[Message #47]
Lopez Gilberto:
and the same as other jobs where males make more money then females
[Message #48]
Erica Ruiz:
even though the gender roles for females have changed, why is there still a lot
of domestic violence and abuse occuring to women? if women are independent,
smart, etc , why are they letting their partners hurt and dominate them like
that?
[Message #49]
Lopez Gilberto:
?
[Message #50]
Lopez Gilberto:
who knows
[Message #51]
kristina oda:
umm.. i dont know
[Message #52]
Erica Ruiz:
well...i don't know the answer to my own question....
[Message #53]
Lopez Gilberto:
its different when you have kids with that person i guess
[Message #54]
Erica Ruiz:
regarding the social class text, did anyone get something? i didn't
[Message #55]
Lopez Gilberto:
for the essay?
[Message #56]
kristina oda:
the social class i didnt really get into that one
[Message #57]
Erica Ruiz:
yeah
[Message #58]
Lopez Gilberto:
no im doing the gender roles
[Message #59]
Erica Ruiz:
i think i am going to do that one too...thanks anyway
[Message #60]
kristina oda:
okay guys nice talkin to you!
[Message #61]
Erica Ruiz:
same here....have a good weekend!
[Message #62]
Amy Lawlor:
