will this nightmare ever end?j/k
[Message #3]
Amy Lawlor:
no
[Message #4]
cecilia ellington:
what topics did you do for the hw?
[Message #5]
michael mark:
I think Iwas thinking about movies. comparing how women are portrayed in movies
like kill bill or the charlies angel sereies.
more agressive portrayals of women compared to the stories. I think I am on the
right track?
[Message #6]
michael mark:
what about you .
[Message #7]
cecilia ellington:
i used magazines.....i used cosmo and maxim.....
[Message #8]
EMMA JIMENEZ:
For the cultural text that shows differences in social class I chose MTV Cribs.
It gives a biased view on how celebrities live in comparison to how the average
viewer lives. Magazines were what I chose for gender roles and differences.
[Message #9]
michael mark:
okay how did you use those two periodicals for the essay?
[Message #10]
michael mark:
cool
[Message #11]
cecilia ellington:
in cosmo it basically tells women how to to be and stay pretty.
[Message #12]
cecilia ellington:
and in maxim being that it is a male magazine it basically sells sex...
[Message #13]
Amy Lawlor:
ah, good idea. So, in B and the B, the heroine is a "beauty"--what would a
modern heroine be like today? What would be her primary asset--beauty? strenth?
intelliegence?
and can you think of examples?
[Message #14]
EMMA JIMENEZ:
Michael, what about any cultural texts about men?
[Message #15]
michael mark:
I guess it is kinda like the import culture magazines, it depicts males express
themselves with thier cars and shows females as more for Window dressing for the
cars. testosterone inducedbacking
[Message #16]
michael mark:
It rarely enforces female participation when it comes to competition in races or
car shows, only the advertisement of flesh.when selling thier posters.
[Message #17]
EMMA JIMENEZ:
I think that a lot of women would like to think that their primary asset is
their mind, but in reality, it's physical beauty also. I mean, if it wasn't
beauty, then why would we spend so much time trying to improve our appearances?
The same goes for men, but along with beauty, physical strength is important as
well.
[Message #18]
michael mark:
I think a modern heroin would be better armed with intelegence and strength than
looks. when it comes down to it all you will ever have in old age is your
intellgence.
[Message #19]
cecilia ellington:
thats true for women sex and beauty sells and for men its basically how much
money they have and how strong they are....
[Message #20]
michael mark:
exactly.
[Message #21]
cecilia ellington:
you rarely see mens magazines talking about how they can improve their skin and
hair all it really talks about is how they can get better abs or something
[Message #22]
michael mark:
I do not agree with it but it is what society dictates I guess?
[Message #23]
Amy Lawlor:
cribs is a good show to use to look at social class--what are the dominant
attitudes about social class presented in the show?
[Message #24]
michael mark:
or in Maxims case how to get at the opposite sex easier, kinda degrading.
[Message #25]
michael mark:
car culture is kind of the same,if you drive a custom civic compared to the
latest bmw m sereis it depicts at least for men what kind of poeple will
associate with you.,especially the opposite sex.the life style you live I guess
[Message #26]
cecilia ellington:
the thing that i think is kinda weird is that if men are tryin to figure out
ways to improve their hair or skin they are considered gay........i really dont
agree with that cuz i'd rather have nice abs than nice hair
[Message #27]
michael mark:
Yeah I agree
[Message #28]
cecilia ellington:
i think society has too much of an impact on the way people view themselves
[Message #29]
michael mark:
too self concious
[Message #30]
cecilia ellington:
basically.....
[Message #31]
EMMA JIMENEZ:
It's true that once you get old, you don't have your looks to fall back on, but
since a lot of people know that, they are trying hard to fight the aging process
and are buying into a bunch of products that are advertised thinking that it'll
help them overcome that. In the end, to people their looks matter a lot. Some
just might not admit that. Yeah, men seem to be worrying more about grooming
lately. The media's fault.
[Message #32]
EMMA JIMENEZ:
no, it's ours too for biting into what we're being fed.
[Message #33]
EMMA JIMENEZ:
What about social class?
[Message #34]
michael mark:
but at this time in my life I would not really care about what others think I'm
pretty comfortable with being me, although a little more hair on my head would
not hurt either,.ha ha
[Message #35]
cecilia ellington:
i think everything including social classes are based in what society and the
media think
[Message #36]
michael mark:
would social class also count dating as part of it?
[Message #37]
EMMA JIMENEZ:
yup
[Message #38]
EMMA JIMENEZ:
it depends on who you date. some people care about money and others don't.
[Message #39]
michael mark:
but what about if you date outside your race?
[Message #40]
michael mark:
some think by dating outside they get an upper hand in life and sociall status.
[Message #41]
cecilia ellington:
i think datin has a big part when dealing with social classes.....most old
fashion families would perfer you not dating outside your race
[Message #42]
EMMA JIMENEZ:
Oh yeah, good point. Some people are comfortable with that. It depends on what
race you date though, because you can't generalize as one race being the most
priveleged.
[Message #43]
michael mark:
especially asian unless you got money to take care of the other person
[Message #44]
EMMA JIMENEZ:
I think it matters more if you're a rich person dating someone lower class
because then you have to worry about what their intentions are and what their
interest is.
[Message #45]
michael mark:
or how about where you eat out at , some folks won't even step into a Mickey
Ds,b.k.,or even denny's.I could care less at the places are classy or not, as
long as it is good.
[Message #46]
cecilia ellington:
with the whole asion thing i think it depends.....i am half filipino and black
the money issue doesnt really matter on my moms side it mattered that my dad is
black
[Message #47]
cecilia ellington:
and that is a new issue especially when that is something that never really
happens were my mom comes from
[Message #48]
michael mark:
c.e ithink more about it and think it just depends on the family and how you are
raised.
[Message #49]
EMMA JIMENEZ:
yeah, i was just about to say that.
[Message #50]
EMMA JIMENEZ:
your culture has a big influence on how you behave.
[Message #51]
michael mark:
exactly.
[Message #52]
cecilia ellington:
when it comes down it people are so worried about what people think and how
society wants u to live
[Message #53]
michael mark:
c.e i agree.
[Message #54]
EMMA JIMENEZ:
good chat. take care guys.
[Message #55]
cecilia ellington:
have a nice day
[Message #56]
michael mark:
have a nice weekend.
