Book Choice

guidelines for choosing your text for essay # 3 (the midterm)

please choose a text--novel or non-fiction--told from the perspective of a colonized people. Once you have chosen a text, let me know so I can approve it.

Possible perspectives and potential book choices:

African

Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe

African-American

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, Frederick Douglass

Native American

Mountain Windsong: A Trail of Tears, Robert Conley

Pushing the Bear

Indian Killer, Sherman Alexie

The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, Sherman Alexie

Filipino

Noli Me Tangere, Jose Rizal

When the Rainbow Goddess Wept, Cecilia Brainard

Latino

Song of the Hummingbird, Graciela Limon (El Salvadoran)

The Aguero Sisters, Cristina Garcia (Cuban)

Indian

Ghandi

These are by no mean the only "colonized" people or choices for books, rather this list is a place to start thinking about a book choice.

I also suggest talking with a librarian--they often can rattle off a list of books on the spot--as well as doing research either online or through electronic library book searches.
