Amy Lawlor:
According to "The Marriage of Maria Clara and Uncle Sam: Colonialism and the
Education of Filipinos" who are the colonial influences in the Philippines?
What are the various cultural characteristics that each country has left
behind?
How do each of these cultural characteristics vie for attention in the
stories/poems?
[Message #2]
Sabrina Martinez:
hey everyone.. hows it going...? welll i think that the various characteristic
that ppl left behind are their languages most of all... becaus the american
left behind english many filipinos speak english then there were spanish who
left behind spanish and i've met some filipinos that speak in spanish still
[Message #3]
Sabrina Martinez:
and it's really wierd see them speak in spanish
[Message #4]
andre patterson:
hello everyone
[Message #5]
Sabrina Martinez:
hey what's up
[Message #6]
andre patterson:
the colonial influences in the Phillipines are the americans and the spaniards
[Message #7]
Margarita De-Los-Santos:
Hi, everyone,
I think for the first questions the main influences are mainly the Spanish and
the European's. What do you'all think?
[Message #8]
Sabrina Martinez:
the europeans never colonized the phillipines.. the americans did for a while
[Message #9]
Sabrina Martinez:
and it looks like the phillipines have always been colonized until america let
them be indepentant i think that suxs
[Message #10]
Amy Lawlor:
well for 300 years they were, but not before that really
[Message #11]
Sabrina Martinez:
Why did they all of a sudden become colonized by the spaniards?
[Message #12]
Sabrina Martinez:
i know the americans whated it for WW2 an easy access to Japan
[Message #13]
andre patterson:
i believe that the spanish left behind there language cause i have some
friends whos parents are from the phillipines and i know that they speak some
spanish and tagalog, and are both of spanish and filipino descent.
[Message #14]
Amy Lawlor:
(include Malay as a cultural influence even though it was not a colonizing
influence)
[Message #15]
andre patterson:
the spanish dominated the phillipines
[Message #16]
Margarita De-Los-Santos:
I think another influnces are the relegious one's. Muslims Filipinos died as
the catholic relegion stronger.
[Message #17]
Sabrina Martinez:
Yeah i have some friends like that too.. I think language is the biggest thing
any influences country..
[Message #18]
Sabrina Martinez:
I also agree with the religoion being an influence because the Spaniards
where very strict on relegion
[Message #19]
andre patterson:
yeah i believe that the catholic religion grew as well in the phillipines and
crossed over here to the united states
with filipino americans as well.
[Message #20]
Sabrina Martinez:
yeah because before that many people here where prodistant (sp?).. many
immigrants brought catholism to the U.S
[Message #21]
Margarita De-Los-Santos:
Politics and Educations were other areas that were influenced by the Spanish
colonization. For example, per our reading we saw that the only people that
first got access to schools were the only for the Spaniards who were training
for priesthood. Many universities today particularly in Manila were named
with spanish saints such as: Santo Tomas.
[Message #22]
Sabrina Martinez:
The biggest influence, I think, is the U.S as a whole anything they do or buy
from the U.S is seen with great awe. They didn't much like the spanish, because
here in the handout it says "but because of the negative image of Spain, many
Filipinos quickly abandoned their Spanish heritage..." (pg 89-90)
[Message #23]
andre patterson:
yeah the americans went into their country to help them gain independence from
the spanishs.
[Message #24]
Sabrina Martinez:
yup i agree
[Message #25]
Margarita De-Los-Santos:
For question #2,
Malay, left the Filipino's belief in magic, animism and fatalism. In the
other hand the Americans have imfluenced the Filipinos, with thier language
"English" and their way of living.
[Message #26]
andre patterson:
the americans left behind more of a free feeling helping people to get jobs.
[Message #27]
Margarita De-Los-Santos:
Does any of you know what animism and fatalism is?
[Message #28]
Sabrina Martinez:
i'm not sure what part of the handout is that
[Message #29]
andre patterson:
i have no idea.
[Message #30]
Margarita De-Los-Santos:
The second one. "The Marriage of Maria Clara...."
[Message #31]
Sabrina Martinez:
yeah the american's did leave that freedom feeling behind and the spaniards
left behind a very negative feeling that i can't descibe.. all i get from the
spanish is that they where very strict people and it has to be done their way.
[Message #32]
andre patterson:
oh where the guy pays 10,000 dollars for the 12 year old daughter right.
[Message #33]
andre patterson:
?
[Message #34]
Sabrina Martinez:
oh yeah but the guy has to wait 'til the girl is 18... is that where they talk
about animism and fatalism?
[Message #35]
andre patterson:
no
[Message #36]
Margarita De-Los-Santos:
Another thinks it was interesting as I read this articles was that the
educational system was not establish by the americans to train the Filipinos
about American colonization? What do you think?
[Message #37]
Sabrina Martinez:
i'm lost what are we talking about now? : )
[Message #38]
Margarita De-Los-Santos:
Maria Clara paper.
[Message #39]
andre patterson:
we are talking about the second story... where the men who were old in age
would marry young girls.
[Message #40]
Margarita De-Los-Santos:
Sorry, Maria Clara paper's, Questions #2
[Message #41]
Sabrina Martinez:
oh okay
[Message #42]
Margarita De-Los-Santos:
What do you think about the story the "bride"
[Message #43]
Sabrina Martinez:
i didn't finish that story
[Message #44]
Sabrina Martinez:
but so far it's ok
[Message #45]
Sabrina Martinez:
well that's all i guess... bye have a fun day : )
[Message #46]
andre patterson:
i think that it was kind of weird how the older males would pay for a girl who
was 12 years of age and wait till they turn 18 to marry them.
[Message #47]
Sabrina Martinez:
lol sucks for the guy..lol
[Message #48]
andre patterson:
have a nice day folks. :)
[Message #49]
Amy Lawlor:
