Week One

06/14 first class, syllabus, essay fundamentals

06/15 read: Sommers, Ford, Chiles in MOA

RJ #1 from one of the above readings

06/16 read:  Kuczynski, Katz, Gould, Pollitt (MOA)

bring a magazine or toy ad to class

RJ #2 from one of the above readings

Week Two

06/21 Rough draft due, essay #1 (bring 3 copies)

06/22 read: Follis, Eli, Chiat, Leo, Klein (MOA)

06/24 Final draft due, essay #1 (turn in peer response worksheet and rough draft as well)

read: pp 1-88 in Fast Food Nation

RJ #3 and #4—one from FFN and one from chapter 6 MOA

Week Three

06/28 rough draft due, essay #2 (bring 3 copies)

read pp 91-190 FFN,  RJ #5 (FFN)

07/01 final draft due, essay #2, (plus peer response and RD)

read pp 193-288 FFN, RJ #6(FFN) 

begin reading Savage Inequalities to get ahead

Week Four

07/06  Midterm; read:  Stoller, Heaton & Wilson, King, Willdorf, Poniewozik, Kennedy MOA

 Read chapters 1-3 in Savage Inequalities

07/07 Read chapter 4 in Savage Inequalities, RJ #7& #8 (from SI)

07/08 rough draft due, essay #3

Week Five

07/12 final draft due, essay #3

preliminary annotated bibliography due (expert groups)

read chapters 5 & 6 in Savage Inequalities

07/15 RD essay #4 due (Kozol)

RJ #9 and #10 due (both from essay #4 readings)

Week Six

07/19 essay #4 due 

07/22 last class—final exam

expert group presentations
